There’s a company that makes a functioning brake that looks almost exactly like an A2 birdcage. Can’t remember the manufacturer though.

It's not a flash-hider, it has no flash hiding capabilities. It's a thread protector mocked up to look like a flash-hider, hence a fake "flash-hider". Leave it to Calguns to make things way more complicated and confusing than they need to be.

I've been using a similar one from Aim Surplus:

Similar to A2 style brake, the open top slots and closed bottom increase muzzle control and reduce dust signature

Ended up moving to a KVP linear comp.

You can make your own by drilling holes similar to other linear comps in the end of this thread protector

One (in my mind) great big benefit to the stupid looking thread protectors (like the ones I use) are that they knock a solid 1.5 inches off the total length of the gun. I don't run a brake because I don't need one for the shooting I do and my buddies appreciate it when they are shooting with me. Likewise, I'm not convinced a linear compensator does anything to mitigate noise at or to the side of the shooter more than a bare muzzle does. So at that point, why not have the shorter rifle (assuming a 16 inch barrel)? Or conversely, if you don't mind the added length of a fake A2 thread protector, why not have a longer barrel (with better ballistic performance) with a short thread protector in a comparable length to having the fake A2.
