    model 700 question

ok I plan on building a m40a3 and I was wondering if the action for the Remington 700 is the same across all it's variations or if there is a specific one? I know I need a short action

M40 series rifles are built on short action, it 308 Win. Remington short action is all the same as far as I know. Army's M24 is built on long action, ie 30-06 length. Then, there is magnum action, ie 300WM.

so when I order the stock from mcmillan I'll have to send it to an ffl. I'm a total newb when it comes to buying rifle parts.

Remington introduced the 700 in 1962 so there are quite a few of them out there. To answer your question about any possible difference there may be in the 700 short action I will state that there was a change made to the design in the early 1970s. The early actions are different dimensionally in that the rear bridge of the receiver is lower by a fraction of an inch, this would mean that a modern scope base may not fit correctly on the receiver without some work. As far as I know the change occured about the same time Remington began using a letter prefix serial number, I have an early action on my M40A1 clone without a prefix letter.

If you are doing an A3 and want to have an action that was built in the same time frame I think the G prefix is the thing to have, which may be the current production prefix letter. The USMC got rid of all of the old actions from the A1 rifles when they did the rebuild into A3s.

Why not just order a spec'd out M40A3 from GAP (GA Precision) instead of piecing it out yourself and going through the headach of finding the correct parts and a good smith to do the build?

Just the action -- the receiver has a SERIAL number
Serial numbered parts must go through gun store. everything else, barrel, stock, etc, can be shipped directly to you.

thanks for showing me the gaprecision site I was hoping to just build it. it would be cheaper to buy the parts but after paying for all the smithing it'd probably cost me even more. I guess I'm just better off buying it premade. thanks for everyones help
