    AK Sidefolder Conversion Question

Hey guys. Had a random thought regarding AK's with sidefolders. I have a Saiga I'm looking to get a proper conversion on with a 5.5mm Sidefolding Trunnion. I know folding stocks are considered an AW feature if the rifle's OAL is less than 30 inches when folded.

I know there are ways to fix the mechanism with non permanent modifications, such as a .30 cal casing with a bushings or a hose clamp, but a couple of the builders I've reached out to from out of state have all insisted on welding a small tack weld. A couple have claimed the casing/small piece of pipe does not "satisfy CA laws."

This got me thinking, if I were to have the side folding Trunnion installed on the rifle, could I have the receiver without the bolt carrier and bolt, shipped to me without modifying the sidefolding mechanism?

What would be shipped back to me would be: the receiver with the (unaltered) sidefolding trunnion, and barrel assembly installed. I would then install the casing to fix the mechanism myself once it came into the state, and proceed to completely assemble a compliant rifle.

Would this be legal? I ask this because I see complete AR lowers being sold at gun stores without being modified for compliance. AR Lowers without an Upper are considered AOWs right? Would an AK Receiver without the bolt and bolt carrier be considered an AOW?

    Any clarification is greatly appreciated!

Yes legal without the bolt carrier installed, but seems at least some gunsmiths dont want to ship it this way. Perhaps as added security remove the fire group too. Then it becomes a stripped receiver.

You already own the rifle, stripping it down does not make it a reciever. Since it’s already on the books as a rifle.

Shipping it into CA with a folding stock is importing a AW, for the guy who’s sending it to you. Which I think is why you’re getting the responses that you are.

IMHO, It would be different if it were a bare receiver that was never DROS’s as a rifle.

Just go with the tack weld, most builders know how to do it discreetly and they’re easy to remove when the time comes
