    Whats the deal with SKS's?

Ok, All the SKS I see in the shops are fixed magged. Why is this when it does not have a pistol grip and "CAN" be converted to take mags? Is it because of the name only that it has to have a fixed mag? They are just so cheap it would be nice to have one to fire the 7.62X39 round.

Because "SKS with detachable magazine" is specifically considered an assault weapon under Roberti-Roos - even though it is not structurally different than an M1A or Mini 14 (conventional rifle w/detachable mag).

Actually the fixed mag is no big deal. If you want to load in a hurry just use strippers. Mark

Unless you buy a pre-modified SKS which takes AK mags (highly illegal in CA now), you'd find the detachable SKS mags suck anyways. And any SKS with a detachable mag installed is illegal in CA now.

Stick with the stock 10 rounder, and use stripper clips to feed. The gun works great as designed- why mess with it?
At the range, off the bench, I love top-loading rifles for their convenience.

Aftermarket SKS mags are junk. Misfeeds, jams and the mag falling out. With practice, you can have the mag loaded from strippers very quickly.
