    Upper help please?

I'm just about finished with my OLL build for here in Kalif. Now I need to start thinking about the upper that best suits my needs. This rifle will be used for hunting ground squirrels and rock chucks out here in the West, so a scope is primary. However, I am not blind to the needs of a SHTF/post Katrina culture where open sight are needed. Can you folks offer some suggestions about how I should go? As usual, money is a consideration around here. God bless...

    Gary,

This is the beauty of the AR-15, the configurations are endless. I personally have a DPMS thru a group buy that Priate14 did at the beginning of the year and love it.

Rock River, DPMS, etc etc are all great uppers. I would search around their websites and see what you like, because you're going to get a ton of different opinions on this matter.

    Good luck,

    Mark

DPMS seems decent, I got one of these when they were on sale for $399 and it was IMHO a steal at that price. I did have a bit of an initial quality issue in that the front gas block was a teeny tiny bit misaligned. DPMS replaced the entire upper, took them a few weeks but they did stand behind the product. For another 20 bux you can get one with a 20" barrel instead of this 16". They're currently about $450 which is still a pretty good price for a heavy barrel upper like that.

Here's my build based on that upper. It's a bit of an odd combo, I'll probably pull the EO Tech and put it on a more tacticool upper on one of my other lowers depending on how things go with the law and all.

      Regards,

Go with the flat top and folding iron sights then add a tall scope mount that has the thumbscrew detachable attachment. I'd go with the 20" HBar instead of the bull barrel. The upper gun here has the thumbscrew detachable scope mount. A set of foliding sights would make it dual purpose except for the heavy bull barrel.
