Colt AR guys get in here

Original owner (LEO) is deceased and his wife isn't really aware of its history. Is there anything she needs to be cognizant of?

Is the wife and rifle in CA?

If so it is banned by name. If it was co-registered to her as well, she can keep it, sell it, but "from CA" she'd need to use a FFL with an Assault weapons license to facilitate a sell out of state, or to a LEO buyer who has a letter from his/her dept allowing the purchase for work purposes. Or she can take it out of state and sell it per state and federal laws.

If shes is a CA resident, and the rifle was not co registered to her, there is a short window for her to dispose of the rifle by selling using a FFL as described above with an assault weapons license, take it out of state and sell it per state and federal laws, remove it from the state, turn in to local law enforcement to be destroyed.

If shes not a CA resident. She can sell it per the state laws in which she lives. Colt AR-15's are not rare in other states, but they do demand premiums. I love AR-15's with the grey finish. That one would of been around 1984-1989 production I believe.

"Collectors" like those, but "shooters" don't. Skinny barrel iirc, and maybe triangular handguard? Hate those things.

Its an assault weapon since 1989. If it was not registered in the wifes name (very unlikley) She needs to get rid of it. As mentioned above, it can be sold to a dealer with an assault weapons permit, shipped out of state (by an FFL with an assault weapons permit) or turned into the police.

If she goes the turn it in for destruction route, be advised only the serialized lower receiver is contraband in california. The complete upper receiver group and bolt, stock, grip, and internals are all just parts and can be salvaged and sold as parts. Colt collectors across the country would appreciate those not going into the chipper.
While not rare, all those parts are certainly desirable and would find good homes among builders/collectors.

I would imagine someone here out of state would want it. She's not advertising it, so even if you believe the nonsense that she can't advertise it out of state, that's not a problem.

Dam that’s a nice clean rifle. Id take all the parts if she doesn’t mind it being stripped down.

Have her get in touch with me. I live in Tennessee and can own all of those I want. I don’t need another AR, but I hate to see it broken up for parts. Even if she does decide to break it down, I would still be interested in the lower.

She can PM me through this forum and we can make arrangements for shipping and payment.

Couple other notes. If she wants to ship it out of state, she can mail it. It would be easier to ship in two pieces. A shorter box can be used and fewer questions asked at the post office. Two screwdivers would be needed to get the upper off. Colts of that era have screws in the "pivot pin" afaik. My mid-90's HBAR did.

It is amazing to me that Free Americans think they have to ask permission from .gov to keep their own property. Maybe they're not Free Americans. Or maybe I'm just a dinosaur.
