Scout scope on an M1A Socom ??

I am considering putting a light scout scope on my M1A Socom.

Burris makes two scout scopes ... One is a fixed 2.75 power and weighs only 7 ounces ... The other is 2-7x32 and weighs 13 ounces

I am leaning toward the lighter fixed power scope ... would like to keep the rifle lighter

I mainly just use the rifle for fun target shooting out to 200 yards ... Would possibly use to hunt

Does anyone have a scout scope on their M1A ?

I have the Burris (fixed) 2.75x20mm Scout scope, with Burris (* yes, QD) low-mount, on my M1A Scout Squad. The scout scope has excellent eye relief.

I also use an AmmoGarand (M1 Garand USGI Pattern) web sling.

I like the setup very much.

I’ve used a 2.5 in the past. I’d go with variable in the future. Either way, get an Ultimak rail. Sooo much better.

Pretty much any handgun scope will work on the oem pic rail as is. Widen your search to include that option.

If you want to improve your 16 then drop the front sight post and install a normal post from a longer m1a. 200 yds is no stretch for that rifle with oem sights. 400/600 yd shooting will benefit from scope use. 3/4x is enough scope for that.

My Scout and SOCOM 16 max out at 400yds these days w/oem sights.

I've only one good eye left and I tend to baby it.

I am running the 2-7x on mine and like it very much. 2x for close up stuff, quickly dial up to higher power when I need to be more accurate/ reach out more

Stormvet, our setups are very similar, the sling even looks the same. I too have the QD rings, just forgot to mention it.

I'm not a fan of the scout scope setup for that caliber due to the very limited field of view. I prefer a scope mount in the rear that allows you to use scopes with a larger objective, and higher magnification. .308 is capable of longer range shots, and for that distance, I prefer to have a better tool available.

IMO, scout scopes are best used on firearms that you aren't going to be shooting very long distances, such as a .30-30. The narrower field of view isn't such a factor at that closer range.

Good tip... what rings or mount do you have? Height?

They are an inexpensive Chinese knock off, can’t remember the brand. Very low profile, .80 of an inch so far they have held up well.

Must be "low" rings? Looks like a perfect fit using that Crossfire.

Get a Ams Machine full rail. With a Q.d. scope mount. Pricey but worth it. With Scope removed the rail allows use of the factory sights.
