About to do a .22lr conversion to an AR

So, I won this AR15 on GB cheap and about to do the CMMG .22 LR conversion. Can you share with me your tips and tricks?

Any of you used additional bolt weights from Bore Buddy? Lighter recoil springs? Buffer plug?

Eventually the barrel will be replaced with a dedicated 1:16 twist barrel.

    Enjoy it stock

Nothing needs to be done with the buffer

The transition from the CMMG bore guide is what limits accuracy

You probably won't see much difference with a 1:12-1:16 twist

If you want tight groups, buy a real 22

It's a great tool for newer shooters, saving some $!$ shooting and kids.

Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Thanks, but I have enough 5.56 ARs.

That trigger is a Com-Tac 3MR trigger, so I’m trying to use cheaper ammo

I just bought CMMG’s dedicated.22lr bolt and barrel for it, so I hope to compare the accuracy between converted 5.56 and a dedicated bolt and barrel set. Got a few “real” .22lr rifle too, this one is for cheap spraying and praying.

Congrats the the win OP. I never win anything, ever.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Good suggestion. I’ll see how the included ones do tomorrow.

Not sure yet. People say the 5.56 barrel is a bit larger than ideal for .22lr and the twist rate is too low. I’ll see. I have the proper barrel for it, but I have no time to build that upper and the lower still needs a stamp if I use that barrel.

Winning at GB is no big deal, just bid more than the next sucker bidder is willing to pay and you’ll win, lol.

I paid $800. It seems steep for an AR, but I was going for the trigger which is no longer made, and it had some decent parts like the Maxim Defense PDW stock, Troy Micro sights, JP captured silent spring buffer, etc. I’ll strip the parts off it and maybe sell it as a plain Jane AR later on.

Run of the mill ARs aren’t fetching much these days, unless it’s a KAC, LMT, etc. California compliant guns probably aren’t going to get much bidding action unless you have premium parts in it.

About to do a .22lr conversion to an AR

I went with dedicated 22lr uppers after being less than satisfied overall with the conversion kits. One a PSA complete upper, the other assembled using an RTB pencil barrel and a CMMG conversion bolt. One thing I added to both rifles was the Bore Buddy reliability kit, after getting some FTF and stuck casings. Near 100% reliability since adding them. BDM and CMMG mags are what I use.

This 22lr reliability kit comes with enhanced springs, a pressure plug and an innovative charging handle insert that essentially lets your upgraded charging handle function like a dedicated 22 charging handle. Shop today and receive lightening fast shipping!

I have a dedicated ar22 with cmmg upper.. It did not run reliability with 36g federal but liked 40g thunderbolt.

I put the bore buddy medium weights and the buffer plug and it runs much better with the federal.

I also had one out of battery discharge so I switched to a borebuddy firing pin that is supposed to be profiled a bit different to prevent that.

I am also running a better-mag adapter with s&w mp-22 mags in the lower which allows the bolt hold-open/release to function.

And for those concerned about legal gray zones of rimfire conversion, there is no way a 5.56 mag will fit into the magwell with the mag-adapter intalled.

At 25 yards, they can be surprisingly good with quality ammunition.

Thanks, toiletfighter. No, no suppressors today. The wife will on the same range shooting her handgun, so no sense dirtying up my cans.

Ok, got it. The buffer plug is a must install then. I’ll mess with the rest as troubles arise.

With the buffer tube plug, did you remove the original 5.56 buffer and spring?

Nope, the plug installs directly over the buffer. Easy peasy
