Out of State With a CA WASR

Hey guys, finally made my great escape and am in a free state. I am looking to offload some guns I never shoot to fund NFA stuff and am curious what my options are here.

Not the best pic, but the first AK and AR I owned are pictured below. I didn't know much when first getting into them and soon realized I went the "budget" route, buying/building new rifles of each and never touched these since, which was many years ago. I have other AKs and ARs now and want to get rid of these.

Removing the Raddlock on the AR is simple, I'm not worried about that. The WASR is where I'm stumped. I cannot find any videos on how to remove it. Does a gunsmith need to do this?

Also, is the WASR in its current configuration even legal in CA? Could I sell it to someone there and just leave the maglock on? I know a maglocked AR alone is not good enough anymore, so I have to sell the AR in my new state, but I am unfamiliar with how AKs need to be configured now.

Curious what you guys would do for the WASR. Regardless of removing the maglock or not, I'm definitely selling it, just depends which state it is in.

    Thanks!

It should be very simple to remove the mag lock on the WASR. Usually 3-4 hex bolts.

If your guns aren’t registered as AWs in CA, they better not be in CA anymore. Take the AR upper off, take the AK pistol grip off and head for the border. EDIT: you can get a fin grip for the AK, but why spend the money if you are leaving or have left.

    Congrats on your escape!

Looks like the device on the WASR has some screws holding it together. Worst case you could cut it off. It's worthless now. I wouldn't sell the WASR, but up to you of course. Selling my 5.45 WASR is my biggest gun regret.

      Congratulations on your escape.

No worries there, this pic was taken in the new state and I have been here for a few months now.

This particular maglock is riveted. My OPAP's lock was screwed on and I've already removed it.

They're rivets, not screws. Cutting is an interesting option, better watch I don't cut the release lol.

I have an OPAP which I absolutely love. I bought the OPAP probably ~6 months after the WASR and have literally never fired the WASR since. This was about 8 years ago or so. The WASR has collected dust since then. I'd rather let someone enjoy it and pick up a new Glock 19 or can than let it continue collecting dust.

The OPAP had screws, that was a very easy removal. I'll drill them out, thanks. I definitely wanted to ask before taking a drill to it. I'm an AR guy far and above before an AK so I am much less educated on the platform.

I'll sell it out here, thanks!

Lol well good thing you're out of Cali as those wouldn't have been legal to own unless they were registered as AWs. Good thing you didn't get pulled over on your move!

I would sell over there, it would make more headaches selling California in my opinion.

Sounds good. I liked the idea (if in a legal configuration) of selling it in CA to help arm the residents there but I'll just handle the (FFL-less) private party sales here. Thanks.

The maglock on the AK in the pic isn't riveted. It's held on by small hex head screws. You use a Allen head wrench to remove them.

Two pic's of the same device on one of my AK's back when I lived in CA.

You can clearly see the hex head screws.

Wow, thanks for that. I could see the two that were clearly hex, but thought the third was rivetted. There was just enough crud in there that my hex didn't fit when I tried, but after viewing your pic I tried and sure enough it worked. Thanks, man!

Side note for anyone viewing this. Are Raddlocks still useable in CA? I have two used and one brand new one that I obviously don't need anymore. Since I (clearly) am not up to date on CA laws, what's the legality/usefulness of them? I bought them a ways back when a mag lock sufficed, since the Raddlock allows you to go from tyranny to freedom quickly.

They are only used on registered assault rifles.

                      Just chuck them.

                      Glad I could help you.

No, don't throw them away! At least one other guy can use them on his CA RAWs (MrGlockNRock IIRC) They're the best kind of pre 2017 magazine locks.
