    M&P 10 vs Sig 716

One of these is likely to be in my safe in the near future. I'd like to hear what people think about these choices. I'd love to have a Scar, but it's just not in the cards. For me, this is a just in case rifle that will only see the range a few times a year.

I was in this position. They are both ambi with the mag release, M&P is ambi bolt release. The M&P has a 5r barrel contour. The M&P doesn't have nice furniture.

That said, I like the Sig more. But harder to find.

The Sig716 has several proprietary parts that are neither DPMS nor Armalite. Hard to upgrade if you ever want to later.

      No experience with the M&P.

depends on your use case maybe.
heard nothing but "reliable" for the m&p...but 716 owners talk about accuracy.

I love my M&P10 sport. No issues, very accurate. Only paid $800 for it brand new in early 2020.

That being said, if you find a 716 for close to $900, get it.

I voted M&P10 as well, but I also wanted to compliment on that spot on handle!

Own both. Changed the furniture on the M&P 10 to Magpul and put an Aimpoint PRO on it. Reliable through several hundred rounds. Around a 2 inch group at 100 yards with good ammo.

Have done nothing to the 716. More accurate with BUIS at 100 yards. Never gotten under 1 inch. Planning on putting a good optic on it. Way less rounds through it than the M&P.

I would not hesitate to buy either rifle again. Would keep the 716 over the M&P only because of slightly better accuracy. Both have been completely reliable with all ammo I've tried.

Depends on which version of each. There are lots of variations. My dad gave me the 1st gen version of the S&W M&P 10, which seems a little dated today. As do some of the early Sig 716 versions. But the latest and greatest with the long 13"+ Mlok forends straight from the factory are pretty cool.

I'd say whichever you can find that has the most up to date configuration.

If I had to choose between the two I would get the Sig 716i. The only M&P10 that comes with an up to date configuration is chambered in 6.5 creemoor. I'd prefer 308. The Sig 716i however comes with updated furnature. At least the direct impingment version does. I don't know if they still make the piston version, or what they look like today if they do. I wasn't crazy about their looks/furnature in the old days.

My dad was kind enough to give me his old school gen 1 M&P10 Optic Ready 308 rifle for my birthday. It is great. Accurate, fun to shoot. Very old school. But if I were to part with my hard earned cash I would go a different direction. Here is what that looks like (with some updates). Did not want to completely tear it apart and mod it, since it was Dad's.

The AR10 type rifle I own that I picked out myself is a Stag 10. I went with this because I found the lower dirt cheap during a potential ban scare. I might not have gone with Stag otherwise. But I think she turned out great. Very sexy.

FYI, all AR10s are heavy as a tank. These are NOT self-defense run and gun rifles. So if that is why you are getting this, look at AR15 type rifles instead. I own and wanted these because I already own a bunch of AR15 type rifles. But these are and were always going to be range queens for me. So I don't mind the compliance crap as much as I would if it were on a run and gun rifle.

In hindsight I probably would have gone with a 16" barrel on my Stag to reduce weight had I known Dad was going to give me his. Both my AR10s have 18" barrels.
