Hey guys I'm doing my first ar build and I'm having an issue with the forward assist on the upper. It seems that it sticks out in the inside so that it catches on the bolt carrier so it won't budge unless I take out the forward assist. Any ideas? Thanks guys!

Forward assist problem

My advise is to find an upper assembly manual and tripple check that it's installed properly.
Maybe someone with more knowledge can shine some light on your situation.

Check this first.
If it's a .223 build, however, did you make sure that the forward assist pawl is facing so that the outside of the "curve" is against the wall of the upper? (Mental image: hold your right hand so that thumb points straight up. Now begin to curl your fingers like you're making a fist. If you were to sight down your rifle as you would when shooting, the pawl should be in the same orientation as your fingers.)
Other than that, I'm stumped. Check all of your parts for blemishes, weird machining marks on the BCG, etc.Former (graduated

Afraid not, it's an ar-15 build.
Will check on that later this afternoon. The parts all seem normal so I think it makes sense that I might have oriented it the wrong way. Thanks for the advice!Check this first.

Installing the forward assist the wrong way, with the pawl facing the other side will just have it stuck sticking out. Drive out the roll pin and re-install it. I

Well I tried installing it both ways and it still sticks out. Actually when I put it in with the pawl facing outwards it just got stuck. Maybe the part is just out of spec and it's too long? Is the spring in the forward assist supposed to make the pawl go inward?Comment

More likely the upper is out of spec, this happened on some of the AR-10 forward assist receivers, which were then sold as blemished. If you can, have it replaced, if not, read through this thread to find out how to fix the problem:
