    Mounting a forward vertical grip

OK so I am a FNG...a newb, etc. to the black rifle scene.

I THINK I know the answer but want to verify.

If I want to install a vertical grip to a CMMG 16" M4 upper, I will need to mount a rail on the bottom of the grip right? I'm interested in the TangoDown models and would like the rail to leave as much handguard remaining as possible I would like to put the grip and maybe a flashlight in the future - no other mods to the handguard.

I've looked at a couple combo grip/light holders but am not sure which route I want to go.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Yes, you will need to put a rail on the handguard or switch it to a quadrail handguard in order to mount a vertical foregrip. A good but pricey option is a Surefire vertical grip/light combo. But you can also add a grip and a flashlight with either a pressure pad or a rear press switch that you can press with your thumb. Keep in mind that the standard handguards aren't really that stable especially if you add a grip to them there will be some movement.

If it was your build, would you go for a quad rail?

Right now it has a carry handle with A2 sights - that is the only addition as it is a flat rail upper. All I want to add is a vertical grip, flashlight and when Uncle Obama sends me my $$$ for buying my first home, an EOtech.

I can probably wait on the vertical grip as I'm going to spend hundreds of rounds on the range before I even think "why would I need a forward grip" i.e. CQB.

      Thanks for info!

I have free floated tubes on my ARs. Only two have VFGs installed.
If it was me, and I wanted a VFG I would free float the barrel with a nice quad rail to ensure it did not affect accuracy.

You are on the right track as far as adding a vertical grip to your existing M4 style handguard. you will need a add-on rail in order to mount a VFG to your existing gun...

Currently AAC has the best 1913 rail spec adapter on the market, it is not too expansive and it will do the job.

However, i would actually recommend investing in a Magpul MOE handguard. it has a provision for an add-on rail adapter. this is an inexpensive option so you can just run the VFG on your M4.

Rail system is an investment, but if you just want to mount a light and VFG, the MOE is your clear winner in utility and budget.

If you have the $$ to spend on a rail system, the best choice for installing a rail with free float capability on to your M4 upper without any major modification would be the Daniel Defense Omega rail system...

Either way, the Tangodown is the best VFG on the market by far, and you can run a simple Surefire 6PLED light with a Vltor flashlight mount. low cost and good to go with plenty of light and battery life.

I ran a Tangdown VFG and a SF Scout light on my MRP

If it were my build I would free float the barrel with a quadrail, but that is because I use my rifle at work. I just bought a YHM Diamond series at www.pkfirearms.com for about 100 bucks. Fairly easy to put on and it is solid. You kind of gotta look at what you're doing with the rifle before you drop some cash on accessories. But, it you are going to use it for any type of home defense stuff you really need a flashlight mounted on the gun. You HAVE to be able to identify target before you give someone lead poisoning. An Eotech is a good choice for an overall sighting system. I have one on one of my AR's and its a great sight out to about 150 yards. Don't waste time or money on cheap parts, I've been there/done that and ended up spending more money in the long run for quality parts.

Thanks for the advice all. I'll take my time to see exactly how I'm going to utilize it. As for home defense it would only be when we see the SHTF (have to be ready for that of course). Most likely plinking, a little competitive shooting with friends and coyote hunting.

FYI-- INCORRECT, You mount the rail on the handguard. You can buy a small rail that only allows the VFG to mount in one place, or a full rail that allows you to put the VFG anywhere.

CAA makes a very nice set up that allows a VFG to only mount in one place. I think GG&G also have this set up.

i used to have a setup with a VFG mounted on a MI Free Float Rail. Very stable and felt good.

Right now i use a Magpul MOE handguard with a small rail mounted on the bottom of it. not very stable, but does the job.

I would definitely recommend using a 4-rail forearm with a VFG attached
