Doesn't seem like there's space for magazines... I'm very interested in the Larue bag, but if there's no place to put mags and speedloaders, eye pro, ear pro, and tools, that would suck.

Currently, I'm using the Blackhawk discreet bags in 26" length, and they do have an ample Velcro-lined front pocket that fits (if you buy the mag pouches) up to six or seven AR mags. They don't, however, have the dividers, and they aren't as discreet as I'd like (look too tactical, thanks to the D-rings).

Wow that is nice! A little pricey for a soft case but I am thinking about getting 1

              That's a nice bag.

I'm using the Blackhawk discreet case, and it does the job.

I had one but sold it. Was just taking too much time to mount/un-mount rifle and accessories each time with all the velcros. I'm back to the "regular" rifle case.

There's plenty of space for magazines and other things depending on how you set it up, follow the link and you can see other configurations. I did not get this bag for the purpose you specify, therels plenty of oversized cases to fit everything you list but then it would not ne discreet. I sold a 32" Tactical Tailor case for this one and I'm very satisfied.

Can the case be locked with a small padlock?

Is this a requirement for transporting long arms, or just RAW's?

I was curious about this too, otherwise carrying a handgun inside is a no-no,

                            Traveling with Firearms in California
                            HANDGUNS
California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.
                            SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES
Nonconcealable firearms (rifles and shotguns) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 12025 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported. A rifle or shotgun that is defined as an assault weapon pursuant to Penal Code 12276 or 12276.1 must be transported in accordance with Penal Code section 12026.1.

                            REGISTERED ASSAULT WEAPONS
California Penal Code section 12285(c)(7) requires that registered assault weapons may be transported only between specified locations and must be unloaded and in a locked container when transported.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

These are very nice cases for a 16" AR rifle.

I added 2 standard zipper pull tabs so that I can lock mine (a very easy mod).

I can carry my rifle and a few magazines in it with no problem.
