I just read an article on Ammo land about the Kali Key.I did a search on Cal-guns and didn't find any legal worthwhile information, just disparaging remarks about Kali Key and manually operated AR's. Can the real lawyers weigh in? Are the claims about making an AR California legal valid? Does more need to be done to the upper than shown on Kali Key's website?

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good! -
Thank you for the reply, Librarian. Most of the thread linked is why the Kali Key is a dumb idea. The thread doesn't address whether or not the Kali Key makes an AR California legal.See the thread http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...highlight=kaliComment

The first question on the flow chart for rifles is "Semi Automatic? Yes/No". Kali Key converts your semi-auto rifle to straight pull bolt action.
There are other legal ways to have an AR in CA too... .22 rimfire conversion, fixed mag or maglocked, and featureless. All compliance options have their pros and cons. You need to decide the purpose of the rifle to figure out what pros are important, and what cons you can tolerate. We are biased, but choose to build/buy featureless most of the time for many reasons.Comment

What can complicate the issue is that in order to no longer be considered semi-auto, the parts that can make the firearm function as a semi-auto should not be present on the firearm. The first question on the flow chart for rifles is "Semi Automatic? Yes/No". Kali Key converts your semi-auto rifle to straight pull bolt action.
Which is why in the past, CA DOJ BOF advised that removal of the critical semi-auto parts (gas tube/piston) should be removed or permanently disabled from the firearm in order for the firearm not be considered semi-auto.
In order to be 100% CA legal, the firearm should have the gas block removed or plugged and the gas tube/piston removed from the firearm, when the Kali Key is used on the firearm.
Otherwise, if those parts are still present and a standard bolt-carrier group is with the firearm, then an overzealous CA LEO/DA's Office can consider it an "attempted possession of an assault weapon" or a "broken assault weapon".Last edited by Quiet; 03-05-2021, 12:26 PM.sigpic
