    AR15 Barrel

    Hello,

I picked up two new complete uppers in 5.56. They are not high end, and that is acceptable - just plinkers, nothing more. I'll leave the company name out for now.

They are 16" Parkerized 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium barrels with billet uppers.

One barrel was clean as well as the bolt carrier group. The other barrel and BCG were not clean and had been fired. While looking in the barrel, I see a lump/booger where the exhaust gas port is located. It was very noticeable. So, I cleaned the barrel, ALOT. The size was reduced, but every time I run a pad down the bore, it comes out with more carbon. Again, this is supposed to be a new barrel. The corresponding BCG had a lot of brown stuff (rust) coming off on my q tips. Could they or a previous owner plowed corrosive ammo at a high rate down the barrel damaging the gas port? Or is this normal? I have not seen this with my other quality ARs.

I have contacted the maker and have not heard back yet. Thanks.

whenever I have cleaned new barrels, some crud did come out, but nothing to the level you are describing. It was just a few dirty patches and that was about it.

why not name the vendor? Even if they make it right and send you a new upper/barrel, you can prevent someone else who is not as diligent with cleaning as you are, from making the same mistake.

Your post says both new and previous owner? Did previous owner say he rebarreled it with a new barrel? What cleaner are you using? Allow it to soak a bit and use a brass bore brush then patches.

I paid for two NEW complete uppers. No re-barrels. I used hopps cleaner and a wire bore cleaner.

Meh, put a few rounds through that plinker barrel. The "booger" will clear right up.

I haven’t seen corrosive 5.56 for sale in a long, long time

Sure someone may have a stash and fired some in that upper but it’s pretty unlikely that is what is happening here

I'm thinking it is a combo of were the gas port was drilled (in the groove, 50/50) and if there are burrs on the gas port opening. Thanks.

Any reputable company will fire a completed upper for a functions check before sending it out, I'd imagine that they would also have that stated on their website. See what they have to say, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they were test fired for function and the minimal carbon buildup is from that. If you DO in fact have RUST on the BCG, they should replace it for you.

When I bought my BCM upper, it had been fired for function (stated on their website) and the entire upper was shipped COVERED in oil. The BCG had globs of grease on it also.

Whatever it was, it is gone after cleaning it some more. Everything looks good. It could have been BCG rust, or some other brown stuff in the BCG rails (qtip removed that). No evidence of surface rust. Thanks to the forum for help.

                    No worries now.
