I’m a huge fan of the mk12s. The mod 0, 1, and H are some of the coolest looking rifles out there and had there place in years past. I can’t help but wonder why there hasn’t been an update. Even a civilian update. Kac and pri rail systems aside tgere has been major improvements to ARs in the past 20 years. As much as I’ve love A.R.M.S. Products, the arms 22 rings are obsolete. Why not offset sights and a unimount scope setup. If anyone has any examples of mk12s that have the basic components but actual functional improvements I’d like to see them. I’ve spent slot of time behind these setups so I know you can have a very similar look, but I think it’s time we move on from the clones. In spirit, to me the look of the mk12 is the pri or kac rail with an 18” barrel. Thoughts anyone? I’m currently working on one myself

I have to be honest, I don’t know much about the mk12. Obviously you are an enthusiast :-)— if I am carrying a bigger, heavier gun than an M4 or M16, why do I want the mk12 vs. something like the m110? -

^^^Yes you can. I ordered mine direct from them. It is heavy but it is a nice platform. I have noticed that you really need to use the heavier bullets for it though to really get the accuracy it's capable of. I load the 77gr smk personally and it loves them.Comment

I guess that’s why ARs are so nice. The argument could be made that any quality 18” barreled gun would be fine as a DMR, SPR ect. The military has moved to the piston guns I imagine for the reliability aspect. In general, DI guns are more accurate then piston guns. But accurate enough is more important with great reliability is more important to the soldier in the field. For the civilian shooter I think the mk12 spr type rifles are the perfect gun because they are so versitile.Comment

Years ago I built an upper that was "inspired" by the Mk12, but built around light components to be easier to lug around for hunting. While I really liked that rifle, I never took it hiking through brush as much as I thought I might, and I still wanted a Mk12 Mod 0 rifle.
So I started a Mk12 build recently around a Precision Reflex barrel and handguard, but will be skipping the SWAN top rail. With modern cantilevered scope mounts, the top rail isn't necessary, and it saves over half a pound from the forend. It's not "clone correct" but it's good enough for me. I'll post some photos when I have a chance.
If you want one, just build it out the way you want. I have other rifles that are the "latest & greatest" lightweight materials with LPVOs. But there's just something cool about a classic Mk12 with a simple ~3-9x mildot optic.Last edited by DrewTheBrave; 01-21-2021, 1:30 PM.WTB: Beretta 92/M9 series (non-railed), Remington 1100 LT-20,Comment

Yeah, you can do a lot better these days with better and lighter components but then it'll just be another accurized AR, can't call it a MK12 Mod anything.
If you want to own a MK12 cause you saw it in Lone Survivor or issued it back in the days... then build it correct and be happy. If you just want a DMR rifle, you're wasting your money to start with a MK12 clone as a base.
