Long Range Rig

I need help deciding, Pros and cons from guys that own them.

I sold my long range rig and DO not want to go 300 win mag again, it is too expensive to shoot. I am pretty dead set on a .308.

Here are my thoughts.

Feel free to add suggestions, I guess my budget for the RIGHT stick is going to be about 1500 or so not including glass.

I am leaning toward Leupold mk4 for the glass but also am thinking of Zeis , Swarovski, or ??

What are you going to use it for? Varmint/hunting, or competition?

If for competition I would ask in the California Precision Rifle sub forum. Those are the guys shooting in long (600-1000 yard) range comps.

For glass, depending on your budget, Nightforce FFP / USO or S&B / Premier Heritage in that order.

The 700 is pretty hard to beat. And .308 is a great cartridge. If your budget is tight, you can look at the Savage, or the Stevens 200, which is made by Savage. But if you can swing the Rmington, go for it. There are more things out there to trick out the two American guns into whatever you want. The FN is much harder to find aftermarket goodies for.

This is my savage 10 FP with 6.5-20 Mark 4 glass. It shoots bug holes all day. Best group to date 3 shot is .192 and 5 shot is just about .4




For the Money you cannot go wrong. I would love to build a new rifle on a FN action tho.

Stay away from a savage, if you want to be able to compete or shoot matchs. I have FN's, M70's, and Rem700's. They are all nice, build a custom one time and call it a day. Premier and NF are prolly the best deals going.

Check your PM's I have an extra FN action and stock ill get rid of to help you out. Same as CDNN deal......

It may be hard to go custom in that price range. By all means if you have the funds, do it.

Dont waste your time with anything else if you are going with a stock rig and have even the slightest inclination of competing someday. The FN's can be good but you are limited in aftermarket support.

If you like the OEM stock a M700PSS

If you don't, then a M700SPS Varmint (26") or SPS Tactical (20") and get a B&C Light Tactical Stock.

Can you use an AICS DBM without modifying the FN action? What mag in in that McRees?

Just get a 700p and some decent glass. Use the money you save in buying the rifle to put into better glass or a reloading setup if you don't have one already. If you're already reloading, use the money to buy components. As you put a few thousand rounds down the tube, you'll begin to see what you want in an upgrade.

As for glass, I like my new Premier Heritage. Glass as good as my S&B, nice reticle, US customer service, and can be had for about 2k if you look around. If that's a bit out of your price range, go for a SFP Nightforce 3.5-15. Don't bother with Leupold. Seriously.

Long range rig

Try Wasatch Precision Arms in Utah. The have an accurized Rem Sendero thats guaranteed to shoot 1/2" groups. They will make it in any caliber, and they run close to your budget @ around $1600-1700.
