    Kali Key

    Folks,

I have a new AR arriving soon. A friend suggested that I should get a Kali Key for it, and to my neophyte mind, seems like a good idea. I checked with the builder of my AR, but he has no experience with this mod. He said, "The only hitch to you retrofitting will be to ensure you use the bolt I headspace and ship with the rifle, presuming that it will fit that carrier. If not, you'll need to get the new bolt headspace to ensure it's good to go. There's lots of margin for error in 5.56 bolts, so I suspect it will HS fine, but always needs verifying just to be safe."

Does anyone in CalGunsLand have experience and knowledge to guide me in this?

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

SheepDawg, Thanks, and you are correct, a) it is not a maglock anything, and b) the reason for it's existence is stupid, so c) it is expensive camo allowing for those evil "features". Welcome to Kalifornia!

Purchased one for Christmas for an expensive rifle I could not bear to fully "neuter." I went the route of purchasing their complete bolt group which replaces the exisiting bolt group and disconnects the gas system. It is a simple and quick install that lets me keep all of my "evil features".

I have not made it to the range yet but in dry firing the only issue I see so far is that I need to fully and smoothly pull back the large charging handle in order not to short stroke it and jam the action, which then needs the bolt release to be activated to release.

I'd keep my AR featureless and use the money you would have spent towards a Mossberg MVP or Ruger American Ranch that accepts AR mags

Don't use the Kali-key. Someone on here, a regular member but I can't remember which, posted up and experiment they did with using the Kali key. The outcome was it was junk. Wasn't too long ago, just a few weeks.

It makes the gun bolt action? Why even buy an AR15 if you're going to make it bolt action?

                I'd go featureless...

Exactly this. And not just bolt action but a lame bolt action. You have to come off the sights and come off your rifle hold, and fight the buffer spring for every shot. Featureless for the win, try the Sparrow grip and a pinned stock and thread protector.

If you want a bolt action get real bolt action rifle.

They might prefer the ergonomics of the AR platform but don't want to be bothered or be concerned with the issues of having a semi-automatic AR in California.

I've read where this is done in England with the bolt being drilled/tapped and a side handle added. These side handles are common on "space gun" match rifles for NRA/CMP Across the Course competition. The adjustable stock on a space gun typically makes using a charging handle impossible. An adjustable stock on a space gun is considered a collapsible stock, so the stock would need to be attached to a RAW lower now.

Preparing for future California bans. Not a bad idea.

I see two reasons for doing this. First, the mod is temporary, allowing to swap back and forth as may be convenient Second, while the Kali Key is installed, the rifle can be transported legally with those evil features.
