    17 mach2 or 17 HMR

Hey guys I was in the gun shop the other day buying my son a .22 for his birthday. They had a few 17 mach2 and 17HMR's. I would really like to pick up a rifle in this caliber but which one is the better round?

Are you paying for your son's ammo? If not, maybe get a .22.

I bought the Savage package that came with the bolt action rifle and scope for around $250 (don't recall exactly). It's been a great gun. Ammo runs around $13 a box of 50 rounds. Can't compare it to the Mach2 other than the Mach2 ammo is cheaper.

Definitely the HMR. More energy, better at distance, easier (relatively) to find ammo. Rimfirecentral.com has tons of info on both.

I think 17 HMR is ballistically superior than 17 Mach2.

There is no doubt about that for sure. But the price of the HMR is 2 to 3 times the cost of the Mach 2, so you'll have to figure out if it's worth it to you.

The 17 HMR rimfire round has been a huge success since its introduction. Millions of rounds have been sold, the major rifle-makers all offer 17HMR rifles, and varminters worldwide have embraced this innovative, high-velocity rimfire cartridge.

for the price I don't like the HMR.. it is a fun round.. I have both but find myself shooting the MachII way more.. being that I can shoot for less then half the cost.. shoot almost a quarter of the cost.. And only about 400fps slower.. Also the mach II is plenty accurate out to 125 yards.. Have been shooting sub MOA at 100 yards.. rather good for a rimfire.. the HMR does the same. but it shoots even flatter so less adjustment between distances

I have a crap load of machII(CHEAP) for sale too if anyone local wants it.. Search my name in ammo

                            well i've shot both...

i believe it was mentioned but the HMR is based off of the 22 mag... and there for more powerful, has more distances, and a superior round... its usually runs for about 13-15 bucks a box of 50 at your local walmart.... sometimes you can find them on sale online for 10 bucks

HM2 is based off of the 22 lr and there for has less distances, less power, but a good fun round that will run you about 2-5 bucks a box.... but the round is a little newer and a little harder to find

I prefer performance over the cost of ammo. I buy the ammo by case, and forget about the price.
