AR Lower Receiver Question

Hi All

Just a quick question on they types of AR15 lowers that I could purchase.

Would a lower shelf cut or M16 cut lower be something that I could purchase in CA along with an M16 BCG?

My initial instinct is that it would be and if I bought an M16 BCG and put in all semi-auto parts I wouldn't be breaking the law as you wouldn't be able to argue that I am in possession of a machine gun on a federal level but the state level seems to be a little more strict. Would someone be able to advise?

There is no restrictions in CA that would prohibit low shelf lowers or auto bolt carrier groups.
It is illegal (both federally and state) to build a machine gun though.

Please note there is a “named list” of lowers you can’t have in Ca. The link is on the top left of the forum (“ ca semi auto ban (aw) id flowchart”)

My suggestion is $40 Anderson manufacturing lower

I suggust a AERO M4E1 lower over the X15 lower or and Anderson lower.

Reasons are:
- Integrated trigger guard. Installing a trigger guard on your own is a PITA and you could snap part of it off and then you'd have to buy a new lower


- bolt catch uses a screw instead of a roll pin



- Great finish

- Rear pivot pin spring&detent can be secured via a rather than using a buffer end plate.



- Tension screw to get rid off wobble between upper and lower.

Tracer, I have been experimenting with different lower brands and the one Anderson lower I currently have has not had any play with the upper i have put on it (including aero, lmt and custom billet uppers)

I do like aero and have some of their products (I use their lpk in particular most of the time) certainly won’t object to anyone recommending them

My $0.02, an adjustable vise grip wrench, tape up the face and it makes bolt catch roll pin and trigger guard roll pin super easy (after you start with appropriate starter punch)

Anderson by no means is bad. I'd wager and say that Anderson and PSA (don't have a PSA lower but I hear good things) lowers both have the best value seeing how cheap they are.

The old andersons (2012ish) had grip screws that werent drilled in far enough so you had to put washers on the grip screw to make it work. Other than that, i havent had any issues with any of their lowers.

I have a closet full of Anderson builds, no slop and no idiot breaks.

I am always sad when I come across a man who can't use simple hand tools and has no confidence even trying

But on the rare occasion I do come across such a person, likely as not they are from San Francisco.

By “M16 cut lower” you aren’t referring to a lower with the third hole are you? You are only referring to the lack of a shelf?

Correct on the no third hole.

Than delrin or nylon tipped setscrew is easily installed on most any lower. Also can find a better option being a spring loaded bearing tipped setscrew.
