    Featureless Grip for Larger Hands/Thumbs

My Brother will be picking up his first AR purchased from another Calgunner in a few days and we could use some recommendations for Featureless Grips from those of you with Larger Hands/Thumbs. I let him try the Liberal Grips that I'm running on my rifles but they don't work for him. The Stock that came with his rifle is a PSA Classic M4-style that would be fixed in place with a Aim Sports Locking Pin, if that helps with suggestions for Grips.

I like the Resurgent Arms grip the best followed by the Sparrow Dynamics grip. I much prefer having my thumb go over the top versus a fin, even with a shelf.

I like the old school Monster Man grip with an A2 stock. Thumb resting on a 45d ambi safety. good for all sized hands.

I manufacture an extended thumb rest/grip for larger hands if he has a fin already coming with his AR.

I've got big hands and used a VAGPARCA M2 featureless grip that worked well on an LR 308 that I had.

I've been using Monsterman + ambi safety + A2 stocks for well over 10 years.

It feels so natural to me now. How sick is that?

Does he want to wrap his thumb or not?

If he wants to wrap his thumb, and since it's got the carbine buffer tube with end plate and castle nut, and he didn't like the Liberal Grip (similar to a sparrow or resurgent), I would say go with a Thordsen.

If you're comfortable breaking the staking between the endplate and castle nut (assuming there is any) and removing the castle nut, you could swap the endplate for thordsen's ergonomic endplate that comes in their stock kits (just has a rounded edge vs the square edge on a normal endplate). I typically wear gloves when I shoot, so a standard endplate never bothered me on a Thordsen.

If he doesn't care about wrapping his thumb, then a kydex grip wrap on his pistol grip or a Strike fin grip (or any other the other various brands) would work fine and be much cheaper than a Thordsen. Plus, you get to keep your stock, albeit it won't adjust.

If it was A2 style stock, then Monsterman feels best to me. I would do a Thordsen on an a2 stock, but only if the rear detent hole was threaded for a 4-40 set screw. I tried a rifle length thordsen without the set screw, and the spring pushed sufficiently on their plastic retaining-plate piece that it actually caused it to slightly deflect away from the lower, allowing debris to possibly enter the detent hole. I really didn't like that, considering how tightly an a2 stock snugs against the lower. Once I get around to tapping the detent hole or picking up a lower with it already threaded, I'll throw it back on and have that as an option.

Another option is the Ledge Grip. I put this on an Aero FDE M5 308 build with a carbine buffer tube and adjustable Magpul MOE stock, and I actually really like it. It doesn't allow a thumb wrap, but it has that little knob that you can grip with the thumb. It also makes the stock non-adjustable as the grip comes with a spacer that goes onto buffer tube which then rests in the grip. They have various lengths of spacers, depending on the length of pull you prefer. I prefer full length, and so just got their standard grip kit. It's kind of a middle ground between full thumb wrap and non-thumb-wrap. And it takes care of the fixed stock and pistol grip features at the same time. Their FDE was just a tad lighter than the Magpul FDE and Aero FDE, but I ain't that picky. I'd imagine their black color matches any other black just fine. Also, I got the Raptor piece option, which adds a little meat for the middle finger to grip.

I need my stock locked on position 4-6 to get my thumb through with the Resurgent. Impossible on position 1 or 2, very uncomfortable on 3, so 4, 5, or 6 at least.

If he likes position 1-3, Resurgent/Sparrow probably will not work for him.

Also keep in mind that a fixed carbine stock will prevent him from wrapping his thumb around, so you will be stuck with the locked stock (not that it’s a bad thing).

You might try a grip wrap to increase the girth of the grip. I have a pair from munkeeboi (on the forum) on Magpul MOE grips. They sit on a middie with a Magpul fixed stock and another on rifle with an A2 stock. No gap.

I also have a VISM with ambi thumb shelfs with the M4 stock and stock stop.

Lastly I have a Sparrow Dynamics also with an M4 stock and stock stop. I can get my thumb around it but you'll need a rounded over end plate like the one from Thordsen.

2nd for Thordsen. I just put a gen III on an AR-10 and feels like more room than any other featureless grip I've used (used fin, sparrow, resurgent). Here is a photo:
