CMMG Radial Delayed Blowback 8" Build

    It has begun, my friends...

I wanted another "shorty" and wasn't interested in the 300 BO cartridge nor did I want to have to stock up on another caliber, so after much research I opted for 9mm instead. The direct blowback systems for PCC's didn't impress me and I didn't want to drop $2-3K on an MPX given Sig's questionable Colt-like screwing of consumers lately.

Due to this, I opted for the CMMG 8" Radial Delayed Blowback system with their ARC mags instead. I get to use a standard STANAG lower and didn't have to acquire new mag pouches. The design is really amazing, and IMO the best AR9 system on the market. I appreciate the use of a star chamber and actual bolt vs heavy mass carrier to delay lockup and reduce recoil impulse. Yes, 9mm already has low recoil, but the impulse of direct blockback systems "clunk" and destabilize your sight picture more than it needs to considering the caliber. 9mm runs out of powder at approx. 10", and since CMMG didn't make a 10" variant the 8" was the only choice. I went with the 8" barrel, 2" KVP linear comp, 9" MI G2 handguard for the "sub-gun" look.

Note that both Forgotten Weapons and Small Arms Solutions as well as others have videos providing in-depth reviews of the CMMG system. It's impressive.

The other upper pictured is an 11.5" 5.56x45 setup which will be moved to a Radian lower. I have a 12.5" setup that will be going on an ADM lower as well. I am testing the two ambi-lowers, so I can better advise others on them. The EOTech pictured isn't mine, but I like the setup so I have an EXPS3-0 en route. I will likely mount it to the Unity block riser. The Surefire Mini Scout on the 11.5" upper pictured will be ported over to the 9mm upper and the 11.5" will receive a Modlite PLHv2. The 12.5" will receive a Vortex Razor and Modlite OKW.

The upper/lower combo is the Aero Precision M4E1 series. You do not need an enlarged ejection port for 9mm, but might for other calibers. Stay tuned.

Diggin the build... I've mulled the idea of using one of their kits. Range report once you get a chance would be great!

I have the same 8” CMMG Guard set up on my 9mm lower. Much better than the direct blowback design, though I still had the bolt slam in the buffer tube. I now use a hydraulic recoil buffer with a stronger spring, and it runs so smoothly that it barely shifts my sight picture now. I also use a linear compensator, and it really changes the report. Definitely recommend it.

Nice build! What buffer and spring will you use?

It's a great system. Way softer than direct blowback and more reliable with that double feed magazine compared to single feed glock mags. I love mine and would totally trust it for sd/hd.

I'll check for that. I am going to see if the LAW system affects the recoil. If anything, I'll try it on another lower with PWS extended buffer tube.

If you are using a dedicated 9mm lower (glock or other style), did you find any compatibility issues with the system? I know that CMMG has their own dedicated lowers and this system runs fine, however I do not know if it will function with other dedicated lowers or when using a conversion block in a STANAG lower.

CMMG suggests to use a standard carbine buffer and spring since a 9mm heavy buffer isn't necessary due to using a standard weight BCG vs a heavy 9mm carrier.

Thanks for the report. I was thinking about getting another CA7 and pairing it with a CMMG 9mm upper. My only concern is the mag system. I like the flexibility/reliability of the glock 9mm ARs and I've seen not so good reviews about pmag 9mm conversion kits.

Let us know how the mags work.

The CMMG Arc mags are different from the Mean Arms Endomags. MA makes them for CMMG, but to CMMG's specs for this specific system.

I can see how a general 9mm conversion mag designed to be used with other AR9's with varying tolerances, designs, and combinations may not be 100% reliable.

I have it on a Angstadt UDP-9 (uses Glock mags) lower and have no issues with the CMMG on a mil spec upper receiver. Forgot to state that slowing down the action also remedied a stovepipe issue that occurred every once in a while.

I have a friend that runs it on a standard lower with Stern Defense Glock mag conversion block with no issues.

Panels and handstop are from Slate Black Industries aka the two fellas at 9-Hole reviews on youtube. Very affordable prices and very versatile.

Henry and Josh are great guys with their own pedigrees in the industry.
