    Mini 14 question

Here's a shot in the dark.

Do the new Ruger Mini 14 barrels fit on the older 180 series Mini 14's?

Perhaps "for" should be "fit" ?

Autocorrect, my favorite thing to disable ..

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

I don’t think so. The new ones are a heavier profile so it might need some gunsmithing on the receiver and probably a new op rod and gas block

Also, autocorrect is like having an elf who really wants to help, but is profoundly drunk

If it doesn't fit, ASI can fit a hbar for you. Not going to be cheap though.

They can be fit to a 181 series or newer.
Will need the newer gas block and op rod fit

The receiver threads are the same diameter and pitch but no two mini14 barrels of even the same serial number prefix will time to the same receiver.
That means the gas port and extractor cuts need to be re-done.

Gas block diameters are different between skinny and heavy barrels.

The "Series 180" Mini 14 is different from subsequent series Mini 14 rifles. Folks use "Series 180" to mean 181 and later when it should be used as "Series 180 only". The Series 180 Mini 14 uses a shorter (vertically) lower gas block. That causes some other differences.

In theory, all Mini 14 barrels will screw in, but you'd need a .562" size GB for the rifle. Probably a new op rod to ensure it lines up with the gas port bushing and op rod spring guide too. Since the forend of the Series 180 is shallower you'd also need a new "Series 181" and later stock.

Accuracy Systems can do the work. I spoke to Carl last week re the new "Samson folding stock" that supposedly fits all Mini 14s, unfortunately they forgot about those of us with the Series 180 "original Mini14" rifles. Which don't fit.

I spoke to Carl last week

I love Carl. I called him up, way back and ordered a full boat -30 in 6.5 Grendel. 26" fluted barrel. He's straight up like "I'll do it, but: There ain't no mags, ain't gonna be no mags, loading 3 in a factory five is the best you'll get. This thing is never going to feed right most likely". He even had a LH contour laminate stock made up for this thing. Beautiful gun. Never fed worth a damn, and it turns out fabbing a single stack 10 round mag isn't exactly within my abilities either. Well, I was warned. Someday I'll get that thing running perfect just for him.

Any Mini14 barrel will screw into any Mini14 reciever.
The ONLY barrel that will align correctly is the one that was originally installed in that reciever.
This is because there is NO standardization of thread timing.
Ruger uses the receiver to determine where the top of the barrel is.
Screw the barrel into the reciever, then drill the gas port and pin the front sight based on the receiver.
They were not designed to have the barrels swapped like an M14 or Garand.

Maybe contact Ruger and see if they will put a new barrel on your old receiver. If it was me I would want to keep the old type ejector, wouldn't want to do it if they were going to turn it in to the new Ranch rifle type.
