Buffer/ tube/ upper length compatability ar newb question

Im an ak guy taking my first steps into the delicate, picky princess that is the ar family of firearms... kidding, but I am new to this platform. If I were to put an A1 length fixed stock onto my 5.56 midlength system, what buffer/ tube/ spring combo should I go with for maximum reliability? Does this still need a castle nut and all the other stuff that a collapsible stock would need to install? Again, brand new to this so easy on the hate

Actually, 'receiver extension' is the correct name for both. They just come in rifle(a1) and carbine(m4) lengths traditionally, as well as the less common intermediate(A5) length.
