    Thoughts on Brownell's BRN-180 "pseudo AR-180?"

Brownell's has an upper that uses the AR-180/18 style action which means no buffer tube extending into the stock. It fits on standard AR-15 lower receivers, though I think Brownell's now also sells an AR-180 style lower as well.

I'm wondering if the lack of that need to have long buffer tube would make it easier to make a CA compliant AR style rifle. You could put a stock on it like a Thompson (yes, I know that tommy guns had pistol grips, but I mean the stock part) that could make it a non-pistol grip and yet not so goofy as current solutions for AR-15s that have to accomodate the buffer tube and not be a thumbhole stock.

    Thoughts?

Check out Fightlite SCR. That seems similar to what you are describing.

I've read about some QC issues on the fit with the lower.

The uppers are currently out of stock. But before that, they were on sale for quite a few weeks.

I think the hard part is finding some adapter which screws into the lower in place of the buffer tube.

uppers are great and stock adapters hard not hard to find

Stock adapters now exclusively available at A3 Industries https://a3industries.com/1913-picatinny-adapter-compact-buffer-thread-interface/

I might consider doing up one similar to this:

Any idea on which company/companies actually make components for BRN-180? Don't own one but had read reviews about poor fitment.

I believe they are actually built/OEM'd by Foxtrot Mike (FM-Products) which is why the fit and finish can be crap. I've never seen so many issues on basic parts. Saw an entire batch of uppers from them where the entire Picatinny rail (upper and handguard) wouldn't accept BUIS unless you hammered them on. When asked about it they said it was normal.

Cool design but Brownell's should have selected a different OEM.

That's pretty cool! A Fightlite style lower would be great too, and you wouldn't need that rat-tail thing either.

A fixed version of that folding stock in the other post would make for a better compliant AR for me, since I find that the Sparrow CRG-15 grip is a bit cramped for my fat hand because of the ridge under the buffer tube.

Too bad to hear the negatives about fit and finish, especially at that price.

I like the concept, but I don't like the idea of proprietary parts on a common-style platform. My woes with the Sig 516 and other systems when I needed parts that weren't available left a bad taste.

It is a great alternative to the much higher priced MCX, though. I would be interested in trying a pistol variant. It does look like the location of the dust cover would interfere with an ARMagLock though. Maybe a CompMag for compliance.
