    Need Headspace Checked

Does anyone know where in the Orange County CA area I can take my rifles to have the headspace checked without leaving them for a few weeks. Everyone I call either doesn't answer the phone or are swamped with repairs. They are both new AR builds.

I'd bet you could order headspace checking gauges from Brownells for less than you'd be charged to have the gun checked.

Well, I did buy a headspace gage from Forster, it's a 223 REM 1.4646 Go gage. I tried checking both guns and the bolt will not close on either unless I force it. I tried checking with bolt intact and also by removing the ejector clip. I kind of pushed it hard to close it and it was flush but then I could not pull the bolt back. I finally got the bolt free but now I am apprehensive.

It does the same with both barrels and 3 different BCG's. Two of which are brand new. The barrels and 2 new BCG's are Andersons and the other is a Colt.

Did you try chambering a factory round and the bolt won't go into full battery?
If you only buy one gauge its better to get the no--go. A good factory round of ammo is a go gauge proxy.
Its much better/easier to check head space before the barrel is mounted to the receiver.
There are a few good YouTube videos to watch on how to check headspace of an AR15 barrel vs bolt.
I've built around 15 uppers and only had one barrel where the chamber was cut out of spec per no-go gauge. I tried 6 different bolts and none would go into battery. I won't out the budget price barrel mfr but I'll never buy from them again.

Why do they need to be checked? Does it chamber a factory round? Then you are good. Does the brass split of swell abnormally when fired? then you've got a problem with too much head space and you'll need to set the barrel back and get it re-reamed.

Because of the above. Take it to Randall.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

The EJECTOR should be removed as well as the extractor in order to check headspace on an AR. Get a NO GO gauge or see Randall.

Unfortunately, you are doing it wrong.

Bolts have to be completely stripped to get an accurate test.

"Forced closing" pretty much ruins the gauge. Sell them on eBay to recoup losses.

Ok, I have not tried to load with live ammo yet...the barrels I have are chambered for 556 NATO and have a 1-8 twist. I was afraid if I loaded in a live round and barrels not right they would get jammed.

In the mean time I'll look up Randall and see what he says. Seems strange both barrels would not be right though. I did remove the extractor but not the spring.

Pretty rare that an AR15 doesn't pass the GO gauge. Even rarer that two barrels and 3 bolts don't. I believe this is an issue with your technique.

                          This^^

Or just go put a few rounds through it and inspect the brass.

I've put together alot of ARs. Never checked headspace. If it chambers the round it's supposed to, I take it to the range and hold it right next to my face and fire it to check headspace. Hah!

Will the bolt even close on a round though?
