I was just wondering whether or not you guys would recommend using corrosive ammo in an M1a. I don't have a problem with a bit extra cleaning, but I am worried it will cause problems in the gas system. Does anyone here use corrosive ammo in an M1a?

I use a lot of corrosive ammo.
But I wont use any in my M1A. The gun is just too expensive to justify it.
I guess my reasoning is that if I was going to go cheap on ammo I should have bought a cheaper rifle like a Saiga. -
Ya, true, I had it so I figured I might try... probably not though.Comment

Well, if you clean it well, including the gas system, its not like it would be the end of the world. Just not something I would make a habit of.

What corrosive ammo is out there in 7.62x51 ? I've seen some pretty gnarly milsurp, but it's all been "clean"...Leave the cannoli, take the gun.

I wouldn't use it in an M-1A. If you did, you would have to do a gas system tear down and clean with a water based solvent and check the gun a day later. It can be done without any damage, but there's so much non corrosive ammo out there, why bother. I occasionally shoot corrosive ammo out of my Garands because I have a good supply of WWII ammo that is still shootable. It just takes thorough cleaning.Comment

If you decide to use it I have about 400 rounds of 1943 headstamped for sale.Comment

I only use corrosive in bolt guns and handguns because I can be sure they're 100% clean. I clean my CZ52 in the sink in hot, soapy water to get everything out of the nooks and crannys.
I wouldn't use it in any gas gun, and especially not an M1A!sigpic

How would you clean the gas system out (spindle valve, etc)? Flash suppressor, castle nut, etc.
It wasn't meant for corrosive. I don't think you'd be able clean it like you'd need to.
Bolt gun? Not really a big deal. But a gasgun that squirts gas out here and there? I dunno...Comment

Get a tear down manual or find one in PDF format for free and go from there.Comment

I would not suggest using corrosive in any rifle you wish to keep nice. As for the M1A, a double no, as there are way too many surfaces to clean that have the ability to come into contact with the bad material. For instance, even the tip of your opp rod can corrode just from modern powder fouling if you are in a humid or wet climate - and a complete rifle tear down after every shoot is not practical nor recommended. The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.Comment

i know were your coming from, i got an m1a new in box back i january and havent fired 1 shot through it yet...ammo is so out of control right now... i thought about useing cheapo ammo in it but was told just to hold out...I'm the best there is at what I do. But what I do best isn't very nice. --James "Logan" HowlettComment

Try reloading as it will be about half the cost per box of ammo. It may be difficult to find components now, but at least get the press and other equipment. The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.Comment
