Ok, so I'm cleaning my new AK for the first time and I noticed that where the bolt carrier attaches to the gas piston, there is some free play, or it is a bit loose. Is this normal? I tried unscrewing the gas piston from the bolt carrier, is there a trick to this?

To clean the gun thoroughly, but it sounds like it's unnecessary and a bad idea.Comment

I clean all my AKs every time I shoot them. I make sure to clean them thoroughly when I shoot corrosive ammo in them. I figure weapon maintenance is important regardless of the weapon.Comment

There is a rivet that holds the 2 pieces together. Generally the rivet has been ground down flush with the piston so much that it is hard to see. You would have to drill out the rivet head and punch it out to separate the 2 pieces. But unless something drastically failed (broke) you really wouldnt need to go through all the trouble.
If you want to see exactly what I mean check here:
Near the bottom of the page it details how to remove the rivet.MY AR Profile #1Comment
