    Are 10 round 458 SOCOM mags legal/sketchy?

Am I allowed to buy a 10 round SOCOM mag? Is it enough to have 458 SOCOM stamped on the side? Does it needs to have a big bore follower?

on mine I have the stamp and the follower so there is no mistake that its not a 5.56 mag.
5.56: reach out and touch someone.
458 SOCOM: reach out and knock someone down.

I can get the stamped but non socom followers for a bit cheaper, are those still legal?

Mine are marked but still have the 5.56 followers. That is how they were originally designed to work. The brief was that round was to work with unmodified 30 round military magazines. With the aftermarket SoCom followers you can still load and fire 5.56 so it shouldn't be necessary to swap them out.

Maybe not necessary functionally, but having a socom follower installed instead of a 5.56 follower could potentially improve your defense if you end up in court for possession of a "high cap".

The consensus as far as I understand it it that you had better own a .458 upper if you go this route. My .50 'wulf upper goes with me anytime I take normal mags to the range.

Could you let me know if this is correct:
I order a SOCOM upper online (ships to me and not FFL) and then I just put it on one of my AR15 lowers that originally came with my 5.56 AR15?

Yep. You might need to mess with your buffer weight and/or spring rate, but most likely it will run just fine out of the box. You'll want a decent recoil pad unless you are a glutton for punishment though.

Yup, my 10 round Beowulf mags are not marked, but I am not worried since I have the Beowulf upper.

The gun laws are mostly restrictive, not permissive.
That means that the laws list what you can NOT do/have/get/sell/import/possess.
If it's not prohibited, it's not prohibited and therefore you can do/have/get/sell/import/possess it.

That's not to say it's "legal".
                    It's just not ILLEGAL.

An example of a permissive law is the roster of handguns.
You can NOT buy ANY handgun unless the handgun is specifically LISTED or if it fits within one of the many exemptions to the roster or if YOU are exempt of the roster.

There's nothing like the roster for magazines.
