Scoping an M1A, does it require 20MOA rings?

M1A scout in an Archangel Stock. ARMS 18 scope mount, running a Vortex 2-10x40 Razor HD.

Currently have some cheap rings on there. Want to upgrade rings, also would like them to be QD so I can have irons as a backup. I don't intend to shoot really long ranges often. Gun for me is 100-500 yard shooter. However taller rings are required to clear the rear sight, or potentially could use cantilever mount.

I'm a little lost here. I'm open to spending $150-$200 or whatever it will take on the mount, but I need it to be right the first time.

Anyone able to weight in with what works for sure?

Depends on elevation adjustment limitations of your scope. Canted mounts and rings basically shift your zero from the middle of the total adjustment range, so you have more room to play with. For 500 yards and the scope you intend to use, you shouldn't need canted mounts/rings.

FS: Atlas Bipod, Custom G23 RMR slide, ETS mags, Jagerwerks, Recover G26/27, CZ Scorpion bits, etc.

Thanks for the input on that. Is there a difference between ring MOA and ring height? My primary concern is the scope clearing the rear sight of the M1A. So I want to be sure I'm asking the right question.

Ring height and cant are two separate issues.

With a 100 yard zero, you'll need a little over 10 moa of adjustment to do 500 yards. You'll need almost 40 moa to do 1000 yards. So spin your elevation dial to see if you have enough to make the adjustment you need. If you run out, then you need a 20 moa base.
