I just replaced one on my retro build and did it just as described above. The hardest part is dealing with such a tiny c clip. Don't sneeze.

      LMAO!

I was gonna say, "use a big *** hammer", but a sawzall works too.

How do you remove the old one without taking everything apart?

Remove barrel assembly or remove the C clip and push it out toward the rear of the rifle.

If you drape a sheet over you when you take the C-clip off (similar to a cheap ghost costume) then the C-clip can't fly across the room/disappear.

my first time doing this, the c-clip flew away.
I did the CSI style - comb from one end of the room to the other
                but didnt recover it.

however it's a easy fix after all...

Spin the clip so the gap is facing the receiver, grab it with needlenose and pull it off the pin. Pull the pin back towards the rear of receiver. A very slight bend in the pin will make it alot easier. A little packing tape on the forward assist will prevent a scratch. It's really easy.
