Kalashnikov USA KR-9 Broken Firing Pin

I just wanted to document this as it seems that I am the only one to experience this issue so far. I purchased a brand new KR9, had one flawless range trip, took it home and cleaned it, then after dry firing it I heard something come loose that began rattling around inside my receiver. I opened it up to find what is pictured below.

It couldn't have been broken until after I got home. It wouldnt fire this way and it fired all 300 or so rounds perfectly. I'm not sure what went wrong. The spring is most likely mangled from me manually cycling the action because it was able to escape from the firing pin channel after the rear end of the firing pin broke off.

KUSA customer service has been very responsive and is already in the process of making it right, so no complaints there whatsoever. Have any other KR9 owners experienced this issue? I truly believe that I just got very unlucky and perhaps the heat treat on the firing pin was off.

    Thoughts?

Apparently no one else has experienced this issue, which is probably a good sign. I just wanted to follow up on my orignal post regarding customer service at KUSA. I was very impressed to have received my new replacement parts in less than a week from when I emailed them. The new firing pin makes it more apparent that the first one that broke most likely did not undergo a certain heat treat or tempering process as it should have. See photo. The colors of the two steels are very different. Also notice that a small amount of metal has been moved on the broken firing pin by the safety plunger on the bolt, which indicates that it must be pretty soft. Hopefullly this new one doesn't break!

9mm carbines seem to be tough on firing pins. Seems to be common w/ AR9. Enough that the comp guys change them out every 5k rounds and carry spares.

Great customer service on KUSA’s part.

Mine was an early model that I sent in to have the top cover issue checked before it cracked. I had it back in a week with two extra magazine thrown in for free, a sling and a bunch of swag.

Mine just broke as well. I think the problem is don't dry fire the gun. It should says it in the manual.

Have you taken the broken firing pin out? You just need to punch out the firing pin retaining pin which is the small pin closest to the charging handle. I'm curious what the color of the steel looks like. AKs are designed to be dry fired. That's how you know you're out of rounds.

I'd be surprised if dry firing broke the firing pin to be honest.

FWIW mine broke with the factory G2 trigger group. They should at least sell these spare parts on their website. Even in the manual the entire bolt assembly and all of its small parts are not broken down any further in the exploded diagram.

KUSA has no relation and is not connected to the Russian ak factory Izhmash or K Concern. This company came together and started operations after Obamas import bans of Russian rifles and came into scrutiny after not producing any rifles for years. If it were me I would keep a close eye on the products and what they are putting out into the market.

Good to know not to dry fire. I pick up my "Kali 9" next week. Can't wait to shoot it .... if only I could find 9mm ammo.

I finally got the firing pin replaced. My best guess of what causes the breakage is when the hammer hits the firing pin when the safety plunger is not pressed in. All the force goes into the back of the safety pin

Yea they need to sell these as spare parts
