    Not to be that *******, but I concur with War Wagon; have you gone to the range and put at least a couple boxes of ammunition through it, and zeroed it before jumping on the upgrade bandwagon? Making sure the rifle is capable of getting whatever job you envision the rifle is for adequately before changing stuff on it would be a good place to start.

    As for the upgrades you mention, the featureless grip and change in butt stock shouldn't be a significant issue; a Sparrow Industries featureless grip and Magpul MOE or CTR in FDE is pretty affordable right out the gate.

    An extended handguard can also be had without breaking the bank, like say what Monstrum Tactical offers;

    Customize your AR-15 using our extended carbine length, drop-in quad rail with FSP cutout! Installs on all carbine length AR-15 models.

    And while I'm not well versed in all the slings out there, Magpul makes great ones, having owned and used their MS1, MS3, and MS4 slings and they all get two thumbs up from me.

    However, I strongly recommend if you have a rifle with a fixed FSB and you want a flip-up instead, just buy a new upper that has everything you want on it the first time around (ie has a longer 13 to 15 inch rail, and either a Pic rail to mount a flip-up sight or it comes with one) and call it a day. For all the folks that say it's easy enough to shave down a fixed FSB, I've seen more than my fair share of folks butcher that job up and end up having to replace the upper because of their screw up.

      Just buy a new upper. They're cheap. That way you'll have a backup for when you (inevitably) buy a stripped lower and build a rifle.

      And like everyone else said, training is key! Make sure you know what you're doing.

        If worst comes to worst, I have an extra gently used Colt LE6920-OEM2 upper with a gently used 15” free float Troy mlok upper I could sell you. Colt cage code upper with a 2018 dated barrel if I remember correctly. Sure would be easier than building one.

          I too just picked up this same rifle, I purchased a Trinity Force Omega stock. I unscrewed the bottom screw on the OEM stock and having issues taking off the stock. Do I need to use a hairdryer to loosen up the materials to replace the OEM stock or I'm I missing something here?

          Thanks in advance everyone.

            I was in your shoes once OP. If you really really want a free float handguard just get a new complete upper and have two uppers. After years of tinkering with ARs, I did what you want to do, and I've come to the conclusion that it really doesnt make any sense. Its a wasteful and stupid idea.

            Over the years I've come to greatly appreciate the simplicity and reliability of a carbine length pinned FSB. LEAVE IT ALONE, and just buy or build another upper. 2 is one anyway. And then you can pick up another lower and build it out.

            Also you would probably come out ahead if you sold the M&P upper for $350-$400 and just used the funds for another upper. Nobody wants a bubba home built upper made from spare parts.

            Uppers with FSB are great for running red dots. And you dont have to spend $50-$90 for a quality front sight. All you need is a rear sight and red dot. Its an excellent fool proof HD set up where a magnified optic is not practical.

            If you want to use a magnified optic just buy a nice factory built upper with a free float handguard and better quality barrel, maybe even an 18" barrel.

                A good 2 pt. sling - wider is better; helps spread the load.

                    I'm also in the camp of getting a complete new upper to your configuration rather than trying to modify the existing one.

                      For all the things you mentioned, it makes sense to get a new upper. If you want the experience and like to tinker, build a new upper with the parts you want. No point in messing with the existing upper.
