    Newbie build question

i had ordered a AR rifle kit from CBC and was recently told it wasnt california compliant. I tried canceling it but it appears that it was shipped anyways! im new to all this gun stuff and californias laws so i was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me? down below is the link of the kit i bought, maybe it just needs certain things swapped out?? any help and input would be greatly appreciated!

Who told you it’s not CA compliant?

It doesn’t even come with a lower, nothing in that kit can be considered a firearm.

i had emailed one of their customer service reps and asked if it was CA compliant. He said none of their kits were CA compliant.

So none of their kits are legal in CA, but they shipped you one anyway?

        Great business model.

I had originally bought it because i was under the impression that the lower is what mattered mostly and i was planning on buying that from a local shop. I am new to all of this and this would be my first gun build. I should of done a lot more research and asked questions here before placing my order i suppose.

Does it have anything to do with California’s ridiculous Prop.65 or whatever?

I'm not sure? There are to many ridiculous gun laws and crap in California! I just glad we only have about a year left in this state!

I think what the vendor is trying to communicate is. That if you build it as is, and don't make it featureless, or mag locked it won't be CA compliant.

                Which would be correct.

Building it with all the parts furnished by the vendor on a stripped lower would result in a illegally configured rifle in CA.

In my opinion, I'm guessing it's because of the "evil features" that are included in the kit (collapsible buttstock, pistol grip, flash hider). If you pin the stock and install a finned grip (or alternative, e.g. Sparrow Dynamics grip) instead of the pistol grip (prior to installing upper) and swap the flash hider for a muzzle break, it should then be considered a featureless rifle.

I believe the alternative is to install a mag-lock device that requires you to separate the upper and lower in order to eject the magazine. This allows you to keep those "evil features".

I do believe it's perfectly legal to purchase and own the kit, but if installing onto a lower receiver, the above items should be added to make the resulting rifle legal in the eyes of CA.

I can see why companies would be reluctant to send anything to CA, but in this case you're ordering a box of parts which isn't breaking any laws.

Should you choose to do something illegal with those parts, that's on you - not them.

ok, i dont kind the finned grip so much, and think its probably a way better alternative to the mag lock. so if i install the fin grip and swap the flash hider for a muzzle break i should be good? lol

You'll need to pin the stock as well. Or find a fixed one to use instead.

I think there is a thread on here somewhere that contains a consensus on which muzzle devices count as featureless options. I feel that as long as the manufacturer description doesn't mention flash hiding capabilities, it should be fine.

Strike Industries makes a $10 finned grip that works well.

Check out the CA Semiauto Ban (AW) ID Flowchart for more info on ensuring that your end result is legal. Its accessible at the top of the page.

Cheapest/easiest way to get you in your feet with that kit:

Take off flash hider, get a barrel thread cap. Like $8.
Get a Strike Industries simple featureless grip. Like $9.
Get a Strike Industries Stock Stop. Like $9.

                            Enjoy.

There is nothing illegal to possess in that kit. How you build it will determine if the finished rifle is legal or not.
Just build it featureless or fixed mag and you will be fine. Here is a helpful chart.
