New baby No. 1 Very clean Inland Carbine

Picked this up at the local gunshop from the estate of an elderly collector who originally had 18 carbines, including all prime contractors.

In is a late 1944/early 1945 Inland with Serial number 6400389, rebuilt bu Underwood (Underwood ".U." rebuild stamp on stock) The barrel is Inland dated 11-44 which seems about right. It has a Type III rear sight "I.R. Co" stamped, which appears to be correct and original, a Type III band and lug "KI" which would be original. The bore is bright and muzzle crown is crisp, and an M2ball round inserted in the muzzle shows a full 1/4 inch - ME less than1 for sure. It has an Inland trigger housing is a type 5 with the vertical Inland stamp. Hammer is either HI or NI, indistinct, mag catch is Type 3 stamped HI, and safety is Type 3 push safety, unmarked. The bolt is Type 3 round, stamped A.I. and blued with wear, which would also be correct. The slide is a Type V with Inland part number inside and large U Underwood rebuild randomly stamped on the bottom of the box.

From the makeup of the parts, it is possible that when Underwood rebuilt it after the war, and put it in a new old stock SG stock with U rebuild stamp. The stock is the cleanest stock I have ever had, and was probably new old stock on hand when put on during rebuild. Metal wear is minimal. The stock is pristine. It has SG in a box and crossed cannons on the right side. It has an Underwood rebuild stamp ".U." just behind the wrist on the left side, and an X and some other letters in the sling well.

(NO THE SG STOCK IS NOT FOR SALE OR TRADE! It is part of this carbine's history.)

In almost 40 years of using, shooting and having M1 Carbines, this is by far the nicest I have ever owned. It surpasses the 1943 "correct" Inland I got from the family of a retired Army officer who served in the ETO in WW 2!

Very nice and clean example! Congrats.

When I was shopping around for M1 Carbines a while back there definitely wasn't too many available anymore, price had gone up, and most have been somewhat beat to hell. Found a good Inland, same time period as yours, and am very happy with it, but yours looks pristine.

What's cool about that month/year, and what I explain to friends who aren't familiar with firearms/history about why the M1 Carbine is significant, is that supposedly Audie Murphy gave his M1 Carbine away in October 1944 while recovering in hospital from a sniper wound. After re-joining his platoon in January 1945, he'd use his M1 Carbine (I assume a new issue) as part of earning the Medal of Honor at Holtzwihr, France.

I was looking for an IBM one, since I worked for IBM. Seen a few on GB but still a bit pricey

Will you shoot that gun or collector only?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
          (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I will shoot it, of course. I'm 68 and don't see the point of having something in the safe that I don't shoot. It will be well taken care, and won't be a truck gun. It will get shot, though.
