My understanding is that there's NOT a separate list of registrations for AW and 50BMG.
I think they simply added the 50BMG registrations to the AW list.
That being the case, it becomes harder to say that a BMG can not also be an AW...

The registration date might be the only way to tell the difference.

Interesting, I've always thought of them as "seperate but almost equal".

So does that mean that Johns friend Ted can put a 50bmg on his registered lower? Teds reg. letter does state the caliber and its not 50.

yes, if you have a Registered Assault Weapon, you can change the caliber to .50BMG without violating the law. The caliber notation does not limit your use of the RAW to just that caliber.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

^^^^I agree. The only large caliber round that's going to cost that much ($10) is the .408 Cheytac

3 ways to have a 50 BMG on an AR lower in CA:

-- on an already registered assault weapon lower
-- on an already registered .50 BMG Rifle lower
-- on an already registered machine gun lower

                Else, keep it very separate.

From the part of the law that bans ".50 BMG rifles":
12278. (a) As used in this chapter, a ".50 BMG rifle" means a center fire rifle that can fire a .50 BMG cartridge and is not already an assault weapon pursuant to Section 12276, 12276.1, or 12276.5, or a machinegun, as defined in Section 12200.
