Adjusting AR front sight, without tool.

Whats the best way to do this, can anyone detail the use of a spent case?

Take a spent case, bend in one side of the mouth by pressing it into a hard, FLAT surface like concrete/steel (wood is usually too soft). Flip it over and bend in the other side so that you have two flat edges parallel to one another.

Fit the case mouth over the sight and use it to press down and turn. You might have to adjust the case mouth a few times to get it to fit your front sight better.

Sometimes the darn thing just won't cooperate. I used a bullet tip to depress the detent and used a toothpick to turn the sight post last time I forgot my sight tool.

I used the tip of a 5.56 when I was in the Marine Corps, so I kinda agreed with him. Now with the .45-70 bullet, I can see that it would be difficult to use to adjust the front sight.

Actually, any implement, whether it be a twig, a sharp rock or the corkscrew on a Swiss Army Knife is considered a tool by definition.

When I'm at the range I usually have my range bag with me, and in that bag I typically have a sight adjustment tool. If I forgot the sight adjustment tool there's usually some object in my bag, in my pocket, on or around my bench that can be used to adjust the front sight.

Now, I've got at three sight adjustment tools. All different. Usually they're just last second additions to orders.

My favorite one is about 8" long with a handle like a screw driver. That's what I carry in my range bag. I bought it for $10 at the Big Reno Gun Show about 7 years ago.
