    Self-defense ammo choice

So I am making an AR15 one of my home defense guns. I am looking for recommendations about what people prefer as their home defense load.

I have a 1/8 twist barrel, with a carbine buffer.

My thoughts are either 55gr soft tip, or 55gr FTX.

Make sure you give the name of the load you use, like Hornady Critical Defense 55gr FTX, or whatever. Im looking for specifics.

55 grain is likely the ideal choice. Federal XM193 & PMC X-TAC.

I want to get my hands on some of the Hornady Critical Duty you mentioned &/or Speer Gold Dots in 55gr.

For INSIDE the home, I like the 69 and 75gr loads from PPU. They really slap, and don't over penetrate after hitting a soft target. They used to be way cheaper than the "home defense" ammo, but I guess they got popular, because theyre on par with the more established rounds now. I bought cases of them about 10 years ago.

I like Speer Gold Dot in 69 gr, if you can find the Gold Dot in 75 grain it would make a good HD round.

Hornaday TAP. Urban 55-75gr if you can find it for sale to non-LEO.

70gr TSX is a top performer.

Reading more, it seems like plain ol soft point is a good middle ground between penetration and expansion. Fancy expanding ammo seems the logical choice if you are just shooting a bad guy with no thick clothes or other barriers.
I prefer more flexible ammo though, so I think I'd go with the soft point.
I live in a semi rural area, with some distance between homes. Overpenetration doesn't seem like it's too big a problem where I live.

I'm admittedly a bit paranoid about the over-penetration issue living in the burbs with houses pretty darn close to each other, so I run Frangibles in my HD AR. It's not necessarily something that I think is for everyone, but I think it'll put a hurt on anyone with isn't wearing body armor.
