    10 round mags?

Slowly picking up mags for my M1 carbine and I realize that legally all mags are now 10 round. But looking at ebay and all the old mags, I wonder how many have actually been converted. I was talking to an old WW2 guy at a recent gun show and he said lots of higher capacity mags are sold on the internet and people just say they're 10 rounds but many are still the original configuration. Anybody else hear of this? Is it just dumb luck if you ever run into this?

Whoever gave you that information hasn't been up to date on all the various loopholes the CA legislatures managed to plug over the years.

Most common workaround I remember was some companies disassembled the magazines and sold them as "parts kits" with the intent to replace worn parts on grandfathered magazines since that was still legal, but it didn't take alot of brainpower to recognize that it was essentially a workaround to get 11+ mags in state just not fully assembled.

Closest I'd say you would be able to get to something akin to that is purchasing a magazine plugged to 10 rounds before its shipped into the state, like this example:

There's a lot of incorrect statements in your post.

Slowly picking up mags for my M1 carbine and I realize that legally all mags are now 10 round.
Not true, many people legally have std capacity M1 Carb mags. They were either grandfathered in, or they were obtained during Freedom week.

But looking at ebay and all the old mags, I wonder how many have actually been converted.
Ebay requires 10 or less. Could there be some sellers flaunting that rule? Possibly. You think they'll sell to someone in CA? Again, possibly. But just because something is conceivably possible doesn't mean it's rampant. As a counterpoint, look at Gunbroker, and how many sellers flat out refuse to sell anything, including accessories, to CA. Using that counterpoint, it's a miracle that anything firearm related can get sold to CA.

I was talking to an old WW2 guy at a recent gun show
        oh boy...

and he said lots of higher capacity mags are sold on the internet
Technically true. Midway, Brownells, Primary Arms, Jestice, etc all sell std capacity mags, and during Freedom week they also sold to Californians. But if he's trying to infer some bitcoin-fueled dark web sort of stuff, I honestly wonder how much
        an old WW2 guy
        would know about that.

and people just say they're 10 rounds but many are still the original configuration. Anybody else hear of this?
What's your favorite secret fishing location? It would be foolish to disclose that right? So, yeah...

Is it just dumb luck if you ever run into this?
When Freedom week happened, I took advantage of it. And now I have some reliable USGI M1 carbine mags. Luck and opportunity are 2 sides of the same coin.

        But...
If you missed out on Freedom week, I suggest you get your mags from Keep Shooting. They're not perfect but they're pretty good. That's what I used before Freedom week, and occasionally I still use them.
Our M1 Carbine 10-Round Magazine is designed to fit, feed, and function 100% in your prized M1 Carbine. We created this magazine to give M1 Carbine shooters in states with magazine capacity restrictions a quality mag. The performance of this magazine was so good, word spread and now shooters in all 50 states are using this magazine to feed their M1 Carbine at the range.

Conceivably it's possible to get USGI 10/15 or 10/30 mags, but since they actually have some sort of historic value, not many are willing to bastardize them just for the CA market.

There are ways... I have not taken advantage of any of them myself, BUT... with that being said... If you really want them, there are ways.

Years ago, that was the deal. Wink wink nod nod, just say it's 10 round on the ad so the algorithm doesn't throw the ad out. Chances are that a human that might check the pics can't tell the difference.

Some websites sell those in packs of 10 or 20. People have them shipped to me for conversion to 10 rounds. Cheaper than buying pre blocked individual mags

Had a few of those until I crossed the CA/NV border while moving , they were dropped at first rest stop inside NV. You can look and use them if you want , buy mags in NV , install blocks , drive back to CA.

Thanks everyone. It makes sense that all newly manufactured mags fit the 10 round capacity limit, I just couldn't imagine that all the sellers of batches of vintage parts were taking their time to convert all the old mags that are floating around. At gun shows I can imagine sellers would be more careful, but on the ebay...it would be like asking if that fake Rolex was real.
