30 round mag in newly built AR15

After reading the flow chart over and over, I am starting to think I cannot used my legally owned 30 round mags in my newly built AR 15 even with a mag lock installed. Am I stuck using ten rounders?

My AR has a pistol grip.

Go featureless + MM or U15. Then you'll be legal with 30 rounders.

        • If you have a mag lock you must use 10 rounders (or fives). The law specifically states that a rifle with a fixed (non-detach) mag only hold 10 rounds or less.
        • If you have a featureless build (no pistol grip or other evil items) you can use the previously owned 30s.
Double-check the chart, and don't try to use logic.

Pardon my comment, this has been the case ever since people have been getting OLL's years ago. Nothing's changed yet. Keep your fingers crossed for a repeal of the AW laws, but for now, those are your legal options.

People in most other states can use them, even without a mag lock. California apparantly is above the Constitution. Either that or they don't know the meaning of "shall not be infringed".

I thought no matter what, nothing on earth can get you more than 10 rounds in Cali....... maybe I'm wrong on that?

Don't fear the monster man... OK... it looks kinda stupid to me... but stupid is as stupid does.... and it does GREAT... I actually now prefer the MM over the standard AR pistol grip... go figure...Having said that however, I prefer the ergo grip over both... so... my registered AW has the ergo... my cmmg I just built is featureless....

Love your 30 rounders and take them out and shoot with them or they will get lonely and feel unloved and unappreciated... shoot the gun with hi caps after you go featureless....

                    Yes you are wrong!

If you go "featureless" (no mag lock, MMG grip or U15 stock) you can use 30 round mags with 30 rounds of ammo in them provided you obtained those mags before Jan. 1, 2000.

Yes got it, ONLY PROVIDED you obtained them before 2000. So doesn't matter what features or not, it only comes down to before 2000, if you didn't have them before then, it doesn't matter right?

Afraid of what? 3 years ago, you can't even get an AR15 here without a mag SEAL..... u had to break open the gun and top load...

back then, you would think that being able to use a tool to drop the mag(10 rounders) and reload is heaven....

                          As for pre-ban 30 rounders:
Yes you have to had owned them before Jan,1,2000

But......They can NOT be used in a fixed magazine rifle. Any fixed magazine rifle is limited to 10 rounds.
People who legally own the pre-ban magazines use them in either a RAW or featureless build.

                            yep remember those rules

if you go featureless that means you have to remove the bad feature that is the mag lock(because a large cap fixed mag is a bad feature)

A little clarification, I understand the ten rounds in a fixed mag rifle, and 10+ in a featureless rifle but what about my pre yr 2000 owned 30rounders in my registered RAW's?

Oh I see it in the above post, it's ok.
