After my .50 Beowulf killed 2 scopes I ended up with an Eotech, which is what I would recommend.

So I went ahead and ordered the VX-R Firedot last night, plus a few other things. Once I get it installed my rifle will be complete. Time to start making ammo.
Thanks to all for sharing your preferences. I get nervous spending the money and it helps to get ideas from others to be sure I did not miss a better deal. Right now that Firedot seems the best fit for features I want inside my budget, will see soon.

Kind of a moot point now, but I'm really happy with EoTech 512 on mine.

Bigger holes are easier to see but age eventually catches up with you. I now suck with iron sites. I'm pretty good with optics. Keeps me on target even in older age. Plus I don't waste ammo anymore.

I have an EOTech EXPS 3-0 on my 458 and I love it. If you're in the mood for more of a budget item, one reviewer put a SIG Romeo5 on a 308 and a 12 gauge semiautomatic and couldn't kill it.

Just bought a Leupold VX-Freedom RDS for my Beowulf. Hope it holds up.

If it breaks they will fix it.

                    Exactly.
And it's bigger than my Aimpoint Micros, but also cheaper.

Does it lose accuracy, or just have a major arc in trajectory? 300gr loads were similar to 45/70 300gr loads(factory ammo; not hotter handloads for modern actions).

The 45/70 in a rifle length barrel can reach out accurately, albeit the trajectory of a football. I would expect the 458S would too, although the velocity drop would be more in a 16" barrel.

Have been thinking about a 458S. Already shoot a Marlin 1895CB in 45/70.

When I was researching the 458S, I got the sense that if you account for the trajectory, you can hit distant targets, just like how 45/70 could in “the old days”.

To be honest, I went into the purchasing thinking of 458S as having a 150yard range and requiring me to learn how to reload...
