    AR-10 builder in Bay area?

Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who can/would build a high-end AR-10 for me here in California? Preferably someone/some company in the Bay area?

    Thanks in advance.

    Black Dog Armory (Fremont)
    US Firearms (Sunnyvale)
    Sportsman Supply (Campbell)

I know all three of these shops have gunsmiths, but not sure if they can do a AR10 build. Id give them call to find out

      how much are you budgeting?
how heavy do you want it?

if you want a battle tested and military approved platform, and the reliability that goes with it, you could opt for a Scar 17S or 20S.

I would also look at the Fulton Armory guns

I want an ultra-light AR-10 in .308 or perhaps 338 Federal along these lines:

I agree with these facts: Here are the places modern AR10's are porky: Heavy Barrels Massive Carriers Unnecessarily beefy receivers Rail with scope is heavier than integral carry handle. Forward assist adds weight. Handguards and stocks are not as light as the fiberglass originals I have been...

I'd be happy with either caliber in a rifle weighing 5# (empty) or a little less. I have a specific purpose for such a rifle and therefore am willing to pay the toll in order to have it. Obviously it's a rifle to be carried a lot and not necessarily shot a lot.

            Oy, you want a 5 pound .308??

Don't know if that's possible in an AR format. You can get a Kimber in a bolt gun that's 4 pounds 13 ounces.

Yep, it's possible. The link in my second post describes a .308 AR-10 build that's 4.49 pounds. To get there the builder used a pencil-weight barrel and I'm unwilling to do that. Otherwise his build would suit me just fine. That's why I'm thinking 5# as a target. I want a rifle that (empty) will weigh right at 6# with rail and scope. Starting at 5# without optics it's easy. All I need is to find someone who can build it for me. The recipe is right there in the link.

Regarding bolt rifles I already have the light-weight spectrum covered. I have two NULA rifles built for me by Melvin Forbes - a .308 that weighs 5# 13 oz with scope and a 35 Whelen that weighs 6# 2 oz with scope. I just want to get a lightweight hunting AR too.

If you chase down the parts, I can build the upper including any pinning and shortening/threading/permanent-attachment of a titanium muzzle device to save weight over barrel length.
