    Over gassed AR-15

    Hello all,

I recently finished building my first AR. I'm very happy with it and shoots great! I did notice that my brass was ejecting at around 2 o'clock. After doing some research, I found out it was over gassed. According to some advice on YouTube, I bought a heavier buffer weight. After taking the AR back to the range, I noticed a big improvement on the recoil but the brass is still ejecting at 2 o'clock. Should I go out and buy an even heavier buffer weight or is there another solution to this?

    Thank you all!

Heavier buffers are always an option, but you might also want to look into an adjustable gas block or the Bootleg Adjustable BCG.

How many rounds you got through it?
I dreamed of owning a (insert off roster gun here)...

Oh yeah....then the earth splits open with me on one side and the (off roster gun) on the other. Then appeared a large red-glowing pit with gavin newscum, diane frankenstein and governor "brown the drain" at the bottom of it, waving their pitchforks at me.

its not a big deal, I usually like them gassed so they eject about 4 oclock with wolf ammo which leaves it overgassed with 855 or 193. If it is comfortable to shoot and runs well overgassing is kinda a good thing since it will still work when dirty or with bad ammo. That is the whole HK416 theory, they are VERY overgassed and they will keep chugging though anything.

There are far better ways to check on your rifle than reading ejection patterns. You could try tea leaves.

Any unusual wear on the rim of any ejected case from the extractor or from hitting the deflector?

              How is the recoil impulse?

You only have 200 rounds through it. Any issues? What ammo?

Isn't 2 o' clock normal. designed that way for left handed shooters in the military. brass flies away from face.

For a piston non-AR design like the FAL or Sig 550 series, yes, but AR's are supposed to eject around 3-4:30.

If it shoots good, and no malfunctions are happening I’d leave it as is. Who cares if it ejects at 2 O’clock if it’s reliable and runs well. You may tinker with it trying to find 4 O’clock and end up making the gun not happy and introducing problems.

I own several ARs. Never paid much attention to where they eject. If they work reliably, I leave them alone.

Over gassed just means extra reliable. If it’s not a competition mouse fart gun who cares?

Mine have either adjustable gas blocks or adjustable gas keys on the BCG. Tune it to taste.

Just confirming - your upper is standard A2 or A4 with foreard assist and deflector? If slick side or other then 2:00 ejection angle may be "correct".

Brass tossed to the forward and right is not a sole indicator of an over gassed AR.

Case head swipes, case rims being shaved/missing sections, severely flattened primers etc are the usual indicators. With time comes excessive/premature wear. Broken bolt lugs or cam pin area on the bolt. Snap!

It's a system that starts with the gas port size, correct ammo for the size of port, action spring/buffer weight and ejector/extractor.

If the OP's rifle works sans these other indicators he should find something else to be concerned about.
