    Advice on protecting wood stock

I have some old firearms, and I know how to care for the steel with oil or grease.

But what should I do to protect the wood stock?

I suggest you post this in the C&R section. Those guys know how to preserve wood stocks. Also be specific on the gun & the condition it's in right now. For example, applying BLO/tung oil works for a Garand stock but wouldn't be correct for a Mosin stock.

Look for some Danish Oil. The wood on my K98 bring-back was drying out and feeling brittle, so I did some research and read about that oil. I used it and it worked nicely. I rubbed it on liberally, let it set for a half-hour and rubbed off the excess. Did that a couple of times. It soaks in and solidifies bit. The wood seems in better condition and more resilient, and has not deteriorated. Did not change the finish, or the color much. Looks better to me and I will continue to use it. I believe I saw some at Ace Hardware.

          I have about 4-5.

I just want to keep them from drying out, and provide some protection.

Johnsons' works, or should I go for a firearm specialty wax?

The internet standard seems to be Renaissance Wax...It appears to be the same as Johnson's or Mini-Wax carnauba paste, intended for hardwood floors. You can apply and let it dry, and then either buff it out or leave it unburied.

HD or Lowe's will have what you need.

Ren’s museum quality and use by museums, a bit more $ but Johnson’s will do the job and can be bought at you local hardware store for $7.
