I want to build a target/long range AR setup, and I'm split in deciding whether to go with a 3-9x40mm or 3-9x50mm scope. Any advice? thanks.

The difference between the 40 and 50 mm is that you will have a larger field of view with the 50mm and it will give you a larger exit pupil which will extend your shooting by a little later in the evening when the light gets lower.
If I was building for "long range" then I would go with more magnification on the order of 4-12X or maybe a 4.5-14x (or higher) by 50mm in a 30mm tube to get you more vertical adjustment.Frank

3-9 can work but I like higher magnification as well. It all depends on how far long range is to you. I like the Bushnell 5-15x50 but the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 w/ mildot is on sale at Midway now for $299, something to consider.WTB - prelock smith 44'sComment
