Don't know about the first question, but here's a quick worksheet to check 922r compliance: http://thegunwiki.com/Gunwiki/BuildAkVerifyCompliance

No, the receiver is just considered a single part per 922(r).

ak's do not have an upper or lower receiver it's just a receiver. for compliance it's usually receiver, pistol grip, hammer ,trigger, disconector, muzzle device. some people also use the gas piston.

Because most of the time, AK's are built using imported foreign parts kits. If the rifle has more than 10 of the listed foreign parts, it's considered a foreign made gun regardless of where the receiver is made.

            +1 on this.
Importing an AK is illegal. Building one using imported parts is not so long as you don't use more than 10 imported parts.

I have the same problem. I have a sgl20 and want to get wood stock/grips. The only thing that that is stamped US is the hand guards, stock, and pistol grip.

ANY firearm, not just AKs, must comply with ALL firearms laws, including 922. Yes, even your AR-15 or Ruger 10/22 MUST comply with 922r. Firearms considered, by the Attorney General, as suitable for a sporting purpose are exempt from the number of firearm parts. So a Russian made Dove hunting shotgun may be 100% legal even though it may have 15 regulated imported parts. Regardless of where the receiver was made has nothing to do if it's exempt or not; it's simply a part when it comes to this portion of the law, and the ATF says if your firearm has 10 or more foreign made parts than it's of foreign origin and if it's not sporting exempt you are in posession of an illegal firearm.

So, yes, it is VERY possible to take a firearm made in America, Such as a Ruger Mini-14, and turn it into a non-sporting firearm and add enough imported parts that the ATF would have grounds to file charges against you.

You could take an AR-15, use a Canadian C-7 upper, Israeli buttstock and pistol grip, UTG fore end, magazines from Singapore, etc and have an illegally imported firearm even though all the parts where legally purchased in America and the lower receiver was made here in America.

Of course most people who have to go out of their way to go to that extreme, but it is still very possible.

neo pretty well covered it. importing military rifles iss illegal. 922r makes it legal. it's all about the number of FOREIGN parts. less than 10 listed parts. std. ak requires 6 foreign parts be replaced or eliminated. (i.e. an unthreaded muzzle eliminates muzzle device, mmg eliminates p/g)
