Yep, I read this too......... it actually helped sway me towards the 6.5 a little. Ammo availability is going to probably be the deciding factor, this will be a travel gun / upper for hunts out of state. I may not always have my own loads with me.

I tested FMJ, HP and lead tip. It seems the soft lead tip bullets get the tip deformed a bit during feed. I guess lead tip would be good for hunting but I've never seen a lead tip 224 bullet so feed data there to compare with.

How often to hunters take shots at 500 yards?

Hornady Black SBR 75 gr 223 comes with an Interlock derived soft lead tip copper jacketed bullet. It feeds great in my M4-ramp barrel extensions.

I also read the 6.5 v6.8 comparison and decided on 6.5 then started comparing real world velocities instead of gun writers velocity . For instance the article says he is going to compare original 6.8 chamber and original 6.5 chamber ???? Why not compare the chambers we have today and can buy today ? I went to the forum for 6.5 and 6.8 and read the real world velocities people were getting out of real world guns . Don't believe someone who compares apples to oranges . As far as factory Ammo availability it varies from town to town or state to state but I find more 6.8 than 6.5 hunting ammo. Even if the 6.8spc2 wasn't faster than the 18" 6.5 it is not plagued with broken bolts or case rupture . For what it's worth I started my "honest comparison" fully believing the 6.5 was better and set out to prove it but soon realized being right was not worth what I was giving up . I don't down 6.5 or tell people who post that they bought one that they made a mistake but if someone asks which is better I try to keep them from being mislead as I was . If you go 6.8 come over to the 6.8 forum and you will get plenty of advice from good knowledgeable people if you go to " the dark side " enjoy shooting and good hunting.

This!!! My exact journey and why I ended up with 6.8. Nothing against 6.5, it's a fine cartridge.

I have shot dime-sized groups with my 6.8 Stag Arms barrel at 100yds with a bi-pod. Twenty-two inch barrel with a target crown.

I didn't do any "scientific research", I went with 6.8 SPC because it had "Special" in it's name.

I went through this process a few years ago and ended up with a 6.8SPC in a 16" barrel. I shoot hornady 120gr SST and I've killed several deer and hogs with it and it performs great.

also if you reload a easy one is 6x45
it uses 556/223 brass necked up to a 6mm bullet can run up to 90gr bullets to similar velocities as 77gr 223.
Easy conversion as its only a different barrel.

Another thing that may or may not matter to you for 6.8 is the army is doing trials on a 6.8 round again (tjey havent specified which one).. what does that mean to us probably nothing just you never know
