    calcatch anyone?

i'm looking to try the calcatch and need to know if it will work with limited opening rear pins? i have a maglock kingpin that i really like but the opening is limited by design, especially so by the bolt catch.

on a somewhat related note, anyone know if the maglock kingpin and the juggernaut rear pin open the same amount?

protohyp, if you tried this i'm all ears. looked for your video but it seems to be taken down from youtube

ok, well no one chimed in so i just went ahead and bought the calcatch to use with my kingpin.
received all the little bits yesterday (needed a normal mag release to use with it) and installed last night. it works perfectly with the maglock kingpin in the rear. i have a billet upper that didn't play nicely with the maglocks (tried both the gen1 and gen2). it also had some play in it so depending on how i hit the button it jammed into the side of the lower. not a big deal for me, but annoying.

the calcatch is very unobtrusive and disappears into the side of the gun with the bolt release. went in no problem and works perfectly with the limited opening kingpin rear. i got the unmodified version so it still retains the bolt hold function.

on a related note, i assumed they'd all be the same but the brownells mag release spring is longer and appreciably stiffer. so much so that the odin works extended button i bought would just bind up and not actuate with it in there. i reused the maglock spring and it's smooth as butter.
looking forward to trying out the combo this weekend. i think it's a winning setup.

I use these on 80% of my guns with a Juggernaut rear pin set up, Kingpin probably works just as good. Glad it worked out for ya, I've been enjoying have a regular mag release and keeping my bolt release as well.

        Hey Ekk...

sorry I didn't actually see the original post.

Thanks for confirming that it works with the Cal Catch.

since a full power spring is not necessary for this application did you try a lighter spring on your mag release? It may make it a lot easier to push both the kingpin and the mag release at the same time for faster mag changes.

Also can you let us know if it works with bolt holdback? I imagine with a little bit of filing it may just work.

yes it does, at least with the charging handle and empty mag it does. i got the unmodified version. haven't fired it yet. manual bolt hold/release also functions tho it feels 'catchy'. i may have to put a drop of oil on it or just let it break in.

i ended up putting the maglock spring back in there. the brownells 'mil spec' thing was ridiculously stiff.

          where's your video??

I know this is a pretty old thread, but this is exactly a setup i'm considering...

with the bolt held back, can you break the action with your Kingpin and drop the mag?

              No, won't do that
Although you can just buy the modified version of the calcatch which deletes the bolt hold back.
Then you dont deal with sending it forward at all

FWIW, I'm going featureless so I pulled my kingpin and calcatch .

I don't think its possible to break the action with the bolt held back regardless of what maglock device you use, if it did break enough to drop the mag I would believe you would run into the issue of the bcg catching the back of the lower. That's the rub with using maglocked rifles they create a dangerous situation not having the ability to clear the weapon of malfunctions. It can be done but it takes longer and can be very unsafe.
