    SBR permit

to build a SBR you have to fill out BATFE form 1. but you dont need a police chief to sign off on it.

anyone know how hard it is to get the SBR permit to build your own?

Hard....what kind of SBR are you talking about weapon wise? And also why not go the trust route if you are here in Ca? You won't need a sign off.

If you are doing a Form 1 or 4 as an individual, you will need a CLEO sign off.
If you are doing a Form 1 or 4 as a trust or corporation, you do not need a CLEO sign off.

Unless, you are getting/making a C&R SBR, you will need to get CA DOJ BOF permission before you can aquire the SBR.
BATFE will not approve your Form 1 or 4, unless you have approval from CA DOJ BOF.
AOW, C&R SBR and C&R SBS do not need approval from CA DOJ BOF.

Read this link to learn more about how to legally own a AOW/C&R SBR/C&R SBS in CA.

Check here for info on he trust and NFA info:

Apparently, the SBR must be a C&R to be legal in CA.

Don't forget that the minimum length of 30" still applies to semi-auto centerfire SBRs in CA. Being SBR doesn't exempt it from the AW regulations.

Also for short-barreled semi-auto rimfires it has to be compliant with the Pistol Assault Weapon features as it has a barrel less then 16" long.

12001. (a)(1) As used in this title, the terms "pistol," "revolver," and "firearm capable of being concealed upon the person" shall apply to and include any device designed to be used as a weapon, from which is expelled a projectile by the force of any explosion, or other form of combustion, and that has a barrel less than 16 inches in length. These terms also include any device that has a barrel 16 inches or more in length which is designed to be interchanged with a barrel less than 16 inches in length.
With less then a 16" barrel, a SBR semi-auto rimfire is a "pistol" as defined by CA. So for an SBR in CA it must be C&R, and either not semi-auto or rimfire featureless according to the Pistol AW regulations.

That said, a 10-12" barreled .22LR rifle would be mighty nice.

Maybe you should be first asking yourself "how come I don't see many, if any SBRs at the ranges I go to?"

It's probably because people rarely get approved for a Dangerous Weapons permit by the CA DOJ BOF.

Unless you are getting/making an AOW or C&R SBR/SBS, you need to get a Dangerous Weapons License/Permit, before you can get a CLEO sign off and submit a Form 1 or 4 to the BATFE.
If you get approved for a Dangerous Weapons Permit and approved on your Form 1 or 4, you have to register the SBR with CA DOJ via Short-Barreled Shotgun & Short-Barreled Rifle Inventory form and you have to register the location where the SBR will be stored along with what vehicles the SBR will be transported in with the CA DOJ via Report of Security Compliance form. Transporting or storing the SBR in a non-registered location is cause for revocation of your Dangerous Weapons permit.
You also have to pay a yearly fee for your Dangerous Weapons permit and you are subject to CA DOJ BOF inspection audits.

Sounds extremely controversial, and a headache just for a buttstock??? I will stick to my pistols unless I move to another state any time soon. Which is highly unlikely, unless there is a lawyer or trust that can do all the leg work on this issue for me. until that time arises i'm going to stay away from this issue and stay in compliance.

Quiet, my point was that the simple lack of SBRs at local ranges should be a clue that they are next to impossible to acquire in CA. Nearly every range I've been to in AZ, GA, or NC I've seen SBRs and suppressors.

So let me see if i got this right.

If I have a family trust, I can get a AOW (Serbu Super Shorty) by filling out Form 1 or 4 and get BATF aprovial?

                              Its really that simple?
