full length pic rail?

i'm honestly curious
what's the point of the full length pic rail? optics are mounted on the receiver and any front sight is at the very end. i don't know if i've seen anything mounted along the majority of the rail. i suppose it's nice to have the option to do so, but other than ease of aligning the handguard to the receiver, i don't see the point of it.

Cut the fashion crap, determine what works for you and what you actually need and then get it on your rifle in the lightest, least obstructive way possible.

Laser sight, backup iron sights, laser designator (lol), sling attachment point.

I suppose this could also be attached on the upper rail.

Full float AR hand guard makes sense, but the added weight of a full side and bottom rail to attach all the "Dazzle me Barbie" accessories gets heavy/cluttered fast.

Thank the gun gods for varieties that include realistically usable real estate. Full length top bothers me not.

PSPD = picatinny slots per dollar (also adds more FOS points)

There is no point thats why pretty much every manufacturer has come out with "lightweight" handguards that ommit the picatinny rail in the middle of the handguard. This has pretty much become the industry norm for at least the last 3-4 years. Where have you been OP? Go to PSA's website. You can pick up a basic complete upper with one of these "lightweight" handguards for $260. Full length picatinny rail on top has been rendered obsolete with the advent of MLok and Keymod designs. You can attach accessories directly to the handguard without a rail section or attach rail sections as needed. Really really old news OP. I see you just joined calguns in July. Welcome.

even if obsolete, a good number of uppers i see online still have a continuous top rail so my assumption was that there is a market for it, i just couldn't discern what that was considering the guns i see irl are pretty barren up top.
as mentioned, i'm new here -and to guns in general- so i don't have the benefit of being familiar with any trends or developments
if it's old news and they're on the way out, then i guess that answers my question
